I'm not really a newbie, I've been using gentoo and other linuzes for over four years now.
Yesterday I ran into an problem on my desktop workstation, that I simply couldn't fix: Somehow gcc got updated, some libraries were suddenly not linkable anymore, and I was in some kind of dependancy hell, because none of the ebuilds seemed to work anymore, not the basic ones, and also not the ones, that depended on the others that depended on those ones. You get the point
Amarok had stopped working under gentoo with alsa, even though xine worked nicely, and nobody seemed to be wanting to help or to care...
Since I wasn't quite in for 29 hours straight of compiling myself a new system (which would have probably been the case, since I could have gcc'd all the basic struff again, and then the not-so-basic stuff), I started to think about that maybe gentoo did actually piss me off quite a bit.
Downloaded the ISO, booted, installed in a breeze, rebootet and (sorry for the capitals) I AM SOLD!!
I installed all the packages that were on my system before, in something that was more of a package-getting frenzy and had it all running in maybe 2 hours.
We'll see how it keeps up, but so far, the arch way seems to be the way to go!!

I also came from gentoo, sick of the compile times and whatnot, and I must say Arch is the best distro yet.

My name is Chris, and I used to use Gentoo. I have been completely clean for a week now. I switched my laptop to Arch months ago, and the desktop just had to follow suit
Desktop: AMD Athlon64 3800+ Venice Core, 2GB PC3200, 2x160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 2x320GB WD Caviar RE, Nvidia 6600GT 256MB
Laptop: Intel Pentium M, 512MB PC2700, 60GB IBM TravelStar, Nvidia 5200Go 64MB

Heh, I followed the same route a few years ago. I think it was either a glibc or gcc update. Gentoo had some update scripts, but only about half of us were getting them to work, and I wasn't in the lucky half. So, like many, I tarred up $HOME and reinstalled.
Around that time, I discovered Arch. Did a pacman -Syu and gcc (or glibc) upgraded in a minute without a hitch. Ever since then, it's become my Linux distro of choice.

But you still don't post here very often. :'(

These days, I'm more involved with BSD both at work and home. However, I'll always have a soft spot for Arch--I feel that I'm one of its discoverers, and I do know that I turned many people onto it.
Shucks, I put up a page about it back around version 0.3.

yeah, and I didn't find it until 0.4 or 0.5... so sad to see all you oldtimers passing away...... ;-)

Sigh, Dusty, old is the word. I saw Jimi Hendrix live.
However, I have to say, the more I play with different distros, the more I like Arch. For me, it's almost the perfect distro.

Heh... I suppose you don't remember one of my first posts calling arch the perfect distro..... good ol Sarah31...

Being old is great, youngsters can't reminisce.

Now, THAT brings back memories. It's even sort of on topic--I'm sure we all remember how she loved Gentoo--I used to, whenever mentioning it on here, call it her favorite distro.
However, in the very beginning, she was one of the most active espousers of Arch. If you came on irc and knew no one, she would be the first to welcome you.
While we're on reminiscing, I see that the article I put up on Arch is now listed on Distrowatch as a review (which is how it's listed on the Arch web page. Back in those days, it was listed in the docs section.
That's not a complaint--as I said when I slightly revised the page (I mean hey, it was listed on Distrowatch, I wanted to make sure there were no typos) I really just consider that an unspoken tribute to the many users who have contributed to the docs since then.
Ah well, here in NYC it's after 11:30, so I'll take these aging bones to bed.
(Hums a Jethro Tull song--I saw them too, in Central Park--back then, the concerts, which I think are Dr. Pepper sponsored now, were called the Schaeffer Beer concerts--the cheap seats were a dollar and the better seats were $1.25.--oh, the song is,
"Let's go on living, living in the past.")
