Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

Specs of my Laptop:
Model: Packard Bell EasyNote LS
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz
RAM: 8 GB DDR3-1333
ROM: 512GB SSD
integrated GPU: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (i5-2450M)
other GPU: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series] (AMD Radeon 7470M)
Linux Kernel Version: 5.8.8 (latest)
Bootloader: GRUB2

Problem:
A few weeks ago I installed Arch Linux on this laptop after using Linux Mint.
Everything went fine because I never had to use the GPU until a few days ago.
I was bored and installed Minecraft on it and immediately noticed bad performance.
It was a big chunk worse than the performance under Mint.
The debug screen said anywhere from 2 to 30 FPS with an average of 10.
Also I saw that for some reason the game was using the integrated Intel graphics.

What I already tried:
I followed the guide from archlinux.org and tried to configure X11 at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
and X11 wouldn't start (by the way: I start the desktop manually (with startx) after the boot).

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf
Section "Device"
    Identifier "AMD"
    Driver "amdgpu"
EndSection

I also blacklisted the radeon driver and loaded amdgpu driver on startup.

I tried to install Manjaro as a dual-boot but that didn't work either.
One reason might be that this laptop doesn't have UEFI.

Crash Log follows as a comment, because I have to recreate it.

Your gpu appears to a be pre-gcn type using Terascale 2 technology.
That type of gpu won't work with amdgpu kernel module.

To verify what you have please post full output of

$ lspci -knn

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

So the card needs the radeon kernel driver and the xf86-video-ati DDX driver.

Have you seen https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME?

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

$ xrandr --listproviders

Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x47 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:Intel

In the mean time I switched back to trying the radeon driver and on some ocasions when I startx I get a kernel oops which is caused by the driver.
Unfortunately I couldn't save the dump, but afterwards I have to reboot because startx wouldn't work.
I ran Minecraft from a USB-Drive on Manjaro, but still no sign of the GPU.
Could it be that the graphics card is physically dead?
I carry the laptop to school and it might be that it damaged the card, if yes why does it then show up in lspci.

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

you have a hybrid graphics setup, the intel card is always used as the output device but the radeon device can be used for graphics processing while playing games or other gpu intenstive workloads, you need to read the link head_on_a_stick posted.

i setup a nearly identical machine to do this a while back and from memory you will need these packages installed:
xf86-video-intel
xf86-video-ati

make sure xf86-video-amdgpu is NOT installed. and remove any configs from "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/"

make sure radeon is NOT blacklisted as you mentioned you had done

after that "xrandr --listproviders" should list BOTH the intel and radeon cards as providers '0' and '1'

then "DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" should output that the radeon card is being used.

after all that any program or game that you want to use the radeon card you start with: DRI_PRIME=1 'your program/game'

its all in the wiki link but that should get you on the right track.

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

Okay I uninstalled the xf86-video-amdgpu driver and removed it from /etc/modules-load.d/, unblacklisted radeon and removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/xorg.cond.d/* and rebooted.
When I launch xrandr --listprovides it still shows the iGPU and when starting Minecraft with DRI_PRIME=1 it just crashes before it can initialize OpenGL/LWJGL. (No sign of issues in the log)
Also DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo gives me:

name of display: :0.0
radeon: Failed to allocate a buffer:
radeon: size : 4096 bytes
radeon: alignment : 4096 bytes
radeon: domains : 2

I now tried this as /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Screen0"
	Driver	"radeon"
	BusID	"PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

and X11 would start and show me this with xrandr --listproviders

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x47 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
Provider 1: id: 0x8d cap: 0x0 crtcs: 4 outputs: 0 associated providers: 0 name:CAICOS @ pci:0000:01:00.0

but still DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo shows the same errors and the game crashes with DRI_PRIME=1

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

xrandr --listproviders should always show both cards

setting radeon as the driver in xorg WILL NOT WORK, as i said before the intel gpu is ALWAYS the output and the radeon chip gets passed through the intel one when you use 'DRI_PRIME=1'

can you post DMESG and XORG logs ? might give a clue as to whats going on. and make sure to remove ALL xorg conf files first.

EDIT: found this in the wiki which might fix your problem, i dont remember ever having to do this though, but since i no longer have that laptop around i cant double check.

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

Okay, I removed all custom X11 config files (except for the keyboard) and added radeon.runpm=0 to the bootloader params.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-keyboard.conf

Section "InputClass"
	Identifier "keyboard"
	MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
	Option "XkbLayout" "de"
	Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
	Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
EndSection

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

i believe this is your problem:

picked from dmesg:

[ 4.958831] [drm:r600_ring_test [radeon]] *ERROR* radeon: ring 0 test failed (scratch(0x8504)=0xCAFEDEAD)
[ 4.958836] radeon 0000:01:00.0: disabling GPU acceleration

and picked from Xorg:

[ 19.417] (WW) RADEON(G0): Direct rendering disabled
[ 19.417] (II) RADEON(G0): Acceleration disabled

i did some searching but havent found an answer sorry, plenty of bug reports on the dmesg error.

someone with more knowledge might be able to help

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

Since according to this (as far as I understand) : https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99851 it seems to be related to the kernel ( r600 GPU don't seem to play nice with some kernel versions) try switching to other kernel versions ( lts, zen etc.).

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

I tried -lts, -zen and -hardened but those didn't work either.
Now I'm going to look up under which kernel Linux Mint 19.1 ran and compile it and try.

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

Mint 19.1 was released with kernel version 4.15 and from the link I've posted a user reported that everything worked with kernel version 4.17.2 ( but on Mac G5 ).

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

I installed linux-lts414 and it still doen't work.
It gives me the same errors.
I might try an older patch later (probably self-compiled).

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

I tried kernel 4.14.63 (from 2018) and it still gives the same error.
What should I try next?

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

I tried installing the AMD Catalyst Driver v15.201.1151 (from 2015) and it errors with

Detected X Server version 'XServer 1.20.9_64a' is not supported. Supported versions are X.Org 6.9 or later, up to XServer 1.10 (default:v2:x86_64:lib32:XServer 1.20.9_64a:none:5.8.10-arch1-1:)
Installation will not proceed.

Re: Issues with Intel+AMD Graphics

have you tried the 4.17.2 kernel like raindog1975 suggested ?
and even if that works its not really a good solution to use an old kernel, you need to find the problem in the kernel code and fix it
