Re: Arch Gaining popularity

Please lets not start another Frugalware thread here. Most of what needed to be said and a lot of what didn't need to be said has been covered here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=24917

The reason elder(XD) users don't want arch to grow is that they worry windows/ubuntu users(please don't take offense, this is a broad generalisation to illustrate a point) will start asking for features that really destroy more than help. Like a user just asked here on these forums some days ago why TWM was the default window manager when one started x for the first time; he would much prefer that it was gnome that greeted him...

Is it really that serious though?

Just because someone asks for something it doesn't mean that their request has to be given even a nano second of consideration. Since you brought up ubuntu I happen to know that one of THE major complaints many people have about it is that proprietary codecs are not enabled by default, there's probably a post a day about that on their forums. Guess what though, including those codecs would go against the "ubuntu philosophy" and so requests are ignored (or explained by the patient) and ubuntu keeps on. All arch users need to do with requests against the "Arch philosophy" is take the same attitude; ignore or explain.

I don't see any serious consequences of someone asking for Gnome as default DE. I'm glad there's no chance of that request ever being taken seriously but if someone asks it seems really trivial.

FULL ACK!
Respond and not just ignore those questions, BUT keep all the time in mind the arch philosophy and the things we arrived with that way. It should stay this way (talkin about KISS, simplicity, latest stable greatest ^^)

Re: Arch Gaining popularity

I think arch maintains a nice balance - it has enough user interest that there are active fora and mailing lists, but not so much that either have become overrun by people *demanding* their wifi card work OOTB or talking about how their switch from XP didn't go smoothly because they didn't realize they wouldn't be able to play 1/2 their games, and who are now bitter and hate linux 3 days later.  I imagine that keeping a distro like arch on track must be a hell of a lot of work for the relatively few who develop it.  All I can say is thanks to those who do!
