If laptop, and it has mute button (perhaps F1), try pressing it. If it's in mute position and the software muting isn't, computer is always muted. I recently had this type of phenomena with my laptop. Not sure, but perhaps you should be also in wheel and power groups too. Check also volume level, at zero level is normal not to hear anything.

alright, i seen https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1211143 this, and installed paprefs.
i too changed the profile on the configuration settings, from Analog Stereo Input to Analog Stereo Duplex (which curiously appears as unavailable)
here is the output either way...

alright, i seen https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1211143 this, and installed paprefs.
That's a misguided solution to an insufficient understanding of the problem.
i too changed the profile on the configuration settings, from Analog Stereo Input to Analog Stereo Duplex (which curiously appears as unavailable)
That is the actual problem we need to fix
here is the output either way...
amixer -c0:
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0 Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined Playback channels: Mono Mono: Playback [on]
In this case since the card that's actually of interest is on index 1 -c1 would be more useful (.. check with aplay -l you need the index of the card where you want output from)
The rest looks technically alright (...Other than the non availability of the output), now to find out whether this is a pulseaudio or a kernel problem. Easiest way would be to just omit pulseaudio, while not playing anything from pulse, do you receive output if you do
speaker-test -c2 -Dhw:1 #Similar deal, the hw:1 here must refer to the index of the analog card from aplay -lif that doesn't work, then pulse is irrelevant at that point, you either find something in amixer to adjust or we have a kernel/codec problem.

I noticed word 'firefox'. Try first Google Chrome, it has sound without pulseaudio, Firefox has not. If sound works with Chrome, it tells that ALSA works and it eliminates some possibilities.

I rather meant, do you actually hear anything. But as it fails that doesn't seem to be the case, from the amixer options we have a few things left to juggle

Alsamixer automute option ? I have it enabled, and sound works, but some have solved audio problems by disabling automute.
To save settings
sudo alsactl storeMore alsa information in Arch Wiki.
