[SOLVED] GRUB legacy/MBR won't start on a HP Probook 450 G5

Hi !

I'm unable to boot GRUB (legacy mode with MBR formatted SSD) on a HP Probook 450 G5 laptop.
The disk have MBR partition table, the /boot partition is formatted in ext4.

The grub-install command return no error ... But nothing is showing when I select "LEGACY - SSD_SERIALNUMBER" in the boot menu of my HP laptop.

In order to test if the issue is coming from the laptop, I've had tried to install GRUB on a USB stick, following instructions in the wiki. And, it works ... Except that the root partition is on another disk, there is no GRUB configuration difference between the usb stick and the SSD disk.

What would I have missed?

Post your GRUB installation command and

lsblk -f

You install GRUB to the MBR in bios mode, if you passed your /boot as the install destination that's wrong, you pass the device directly e.g. /dev/sda (... note the lack of a partition number)

what does it look like in parted? ( parted /dev/disk unit s print free )

with GPT, the legacy MBR sometimes needs boot flag set ( parted /dev/disk disk_set pmbr_boot on )

(and without GPT, naturally also the regular boot flag ...)

It was the bootable flag missing on my /boot partition.
Normally I do not set/check this partition flag, but it seems that this HP laptop wants it...
