Videos lagging

My specifications are i5-9300H and GTX 1650 Mobile graphics. The problem is while playing videos, it sometimes lags and audio gets stuck and repeats itself. Same something happens with online videos on youtube and netflix. The CPU usage while watching videos get upto 80 - 90 %. I have nvidia(non-free) package installed. I don't think the problem is with the drivers. But I think the graphics card is not being used to watch videos.
I a newbie hence, didn't knew how to properly explain my problem. If any clarification needed ask away. Please help me find a solution.

Re: Videos lagging

But I think the graphics card is not being used to watch videos.

Chromium recently got HW acceleration enabled and I believe so has FF, but at least YT forces avc1 on you since a couple of weeks and your GPU might no support that codec (there're various browser addons like h264ify but they all fail since YT changed stuff) - in YT, rightclick the video and select "stats for nerds" for details on the video.
In chromium, you can check chrome://gpu/ to see which codecs/specs are supported in HW decoding.

this is the chrome://gpu output.
Another problem, watch about offline videos. Same problem high cpu usage, video freezes and audio repeats itself.

Re: Videos lagging

Install task manager and check what is consuming cpu, might be the web browser, but also other possibilities. For xfce desktop environment, which I use, the package is xfce4-taskmanager. If you use other desktop, just do a web search. It's also possible that it's already installed, check the menus.

Re: Videos lagging

Please edit oyur post and wrap the output in code tags, then see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1922783 and elaborate on "offline videos", notably what you use for playback (mpv/vlc/… or the browser as well)

A package/program named iotop is also available, for viewing I/O usage of processes.

To try maximum hardware acceleration in Chrome (or Chromium):

  • open web browser, then set url chrome://flags

  • search for flag Override software rendering list and enable it

  • restart web browser

  • look the current status using url chrome://gpu

If any problems, then just disable the flag and restart.

For expirements there are also lots of startup command line switches.

I'll add here that I resolved my high cpu problem with chrome (video watching) by disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome settings. All is software only.

The "offline vidoes" I was taking about are simple mp4 files on my system. I have tried both mpv and vlc both have simiilar problems. High CPU usage and video getting stuck and audio repeating. It works again if I pause it for a few seconds and resume again.

I have also System Monitor(kde) installed while watching the videos on chrome the Chrome process uses 60-70% CPU, same case is with the VLC player i.e High CPU Usage and sometimes stuttering.

Re: Videos lagging

You can also enable/disable hardware acceleration in VLC too: Tools - Preferences - Inputs/Codecs
It's good to try without hw accelearation, cpu usage might be much lower without hw acceleration and things run smoothly. After that hardware expirements and deep searching to find which hw feature is the cause for high cpu.
