[SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Hi, I've been having this issue with all the kernels 5.8.x.
Booting is OK and system seems fine until

 $ startx

is executed.
Once video-server is running, Openbox loads fine, but then the mousepad starts malfunctioning (it hangs once and again, for a moment) and also the keyboard (keeping a key pressed in a terminal produces the expected output, for instance, the 'z' letter, but with regular pauses) making the system unusable.

I've been downgrading to the last well functioning kernel once and again for some time now:

$ uname -a
Linux arch 5.7.12-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri, 31 Jul 2020 17:38:22 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But I'm under the impression that it's starting to affect other aspects of system (webcam, etc.).

Last system-upgrade ended with this situation:

$ uname -a
Linux arch 5.8.12-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat, 26 Sep 2020 21:42:58 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ sudo dmesg

I have the full dmesg output, just selected some lines in the hope that those are relevant.
Any idea?

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Which graphics driver do you use? The NVidia proprietary one? Maybe try modesetting/glamour or legacy nouveau. Just to see if it changes something. Or switch/enforce the other graphic card.

Any cpu spikes visible? A high pollrate graph logger might be useful here.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Thanks a lot for your response, Maniaxx, and sorry for the delay, things are pretty quirky this days...

I'm under the impression that I'm not using the NVidia driver but nouveau:

$ pacman -Ss nvidia | grep inst
extra/libvdpau 1.4-1 [instalado]
extra/libxnvctrl 455.38-1 [instalado]
extra/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.16-2 (xorg-drivers) [instalado]

I have to read how to switch/enforce the other graphic card.

No CPU spikes visible. Don't know what's a "hight pollrate graph logger", any link to read about would be greatly welcome.

I've just tried kernel 5.9.4-arch1-1 with the same result. Maybe this dmesg lines help to understand the issue:

From kernel 5.7.12-arch1-1 (which works perfectly):

$ dmesg | grep nouveau

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Also found some info from when I tried kernel 5.8.14-arch1-1 (I handpicked what seemed to me like possible relevant warnings in journalctl and dmesg):

I guess those "lost synchronization" are related to mousepad stop working for some seconds?

Thanks for any help.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Can you post /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Try to uninstall 'xf86-video-nouveau' and restart. After that it should run on kernel modesetting/glamour.
If that doesn't help, the next attempt would be to install 'nvidia' (the proprietary driver). Usually the best the most complete driver for nvidia cards.
Its just a wild guess though switching the gfx drivers. The xorg log hopefully brings more substance.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Seems like I don't have a /var/log/Xorg.0.log file:

$ ls -a /var/log/
.      btmp    faillog   lastlog  pacman.log  tallylog  wtmp.1
..     btmp.1  gufw.log  libvirt  private     wicd      xmms2d.log
audit cups journal old swtpm wtmp

Looking at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg found that there's also ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.log location in which I have these:

$ ls -a .local/share/xorg/
.  ..  Xorg.0.log  Xorg.0.log.old  Xorg.1.log  Xorg.1.log.old

So, this is the content of that Xorg.0.log (running kernel 5.7.12 with which everything is fine, let me know if I should boot on the newest kernel and post again):

I would prefer, if possible, to avoid proprietary drivers and instead report bugs to help fix the libre ones... Hope this can be done.
Please, let me know about the Xorg.0.log file (if I have to post the one I have when running the kernels with issues).
Thanks a lot again.

The open source nvidia drivers are not in the best shape though. You're stuck on lowest frequency (power save) unless you switch manually, there might be vsync issues and they don't support all features (acceleration, opencl, cuda..).

The xf86-video-nouveau package is intended for very old cards only anyway. You shouldn't use it. Use the kernel modesetting drivers instead. It has opengl acceleration for xorg and is open source as well. Just uninstall the package.

But i would test the nvidia drivers anyway. It might be the culprit.

Other than that i don't know what's happening there. Maybe try xorg as root (exec startx) or 'threadirqs' kernel parameter.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

Thanks a lot for your answers and information, Maniaxx!, I will try soon the drivers configuration you propose.

Doing some tests I've founded that the issue seems to be related to lm-sensors (or the `sensors` command, I don't know).
My system normally starts the WM and loads `psensor`, a graphic temperatures monitor with a notification area indicator.
When starting Openbox or IceWM without psensor the problem is not present (system works normally), and the problem reappears as soon as I start psensor (and it's present even in the other TTYs, Ctrl+Alt+Fn). Then I tried checking temperatures from terminal emulator with just `sensors` and the response is slow and the audio seems affected (if running JACK with PA modules the modules get lost and the audio connection fail). Considering that the keyword/mouse problem appeared in something like a 2 second interval (frequency), which is similar to the frequency psensor asks lm-sensors (I guess) for hardware temperature info, I'm supposing this is an issue between lm-sensors and the kernel, some kind of clash in the access to hardware?

System is updated. So, any recommendation/idea on how to proceed from here?

I'm not finding nothing informative in dmesg. How could I investigate this?

Should file a bug against lm_sensors?

Important (to me): should I change the subject of the post?

Any hint would be most welcomed. Thanks a lot!

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard and mousepad lagging with all linux-5.8 series

In an updated system with linux-5.11.4.arch1-1 and lm_sensors-1:3.6.0.r41.g31d1f125-1 the problem isn't present anymore.

Still couldn't find its source (already consulted with lm_sensors developers, waiting for some answer), but right now issue is SOLVED.

Thanks a lot for the help and advice!
