tomcat9 folder permissions and Netbeans12

When I set up tomcat with netbeans I need to declare the tomcat directory (/usr/share/tomcat9) in the netbeans dialog box. For netbeans to be able to access it, I set 770 permissions to the tomcat folder. So far so good. but then when I try to start the server I get errors from catalina. It can't create log files on said folder(permission denied). The problem is solved when I set permissions to 777. But obviously I want to avoid that... Any clues? I am a bit confused on how permissions work in this case.
