Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Here are a few I made in blender. There are more color options than before. They vary in sizes, one being 350KB, another being 2.5MB

ArchWallBlack

ArchWallBlue
https://img.rhysperry.com/ArchWallComp/ArchWaveBlue.png
(I think this is the nicest)

ArchWallGrey
https://img.rhysperry.com/ArchWallComp/ArchWaveGrey.png

ArchWallLight
https://img.rhysperry.com/ArchWallComp/ … eLight.png
(I think this is the ugliest)

ArchWallMono
https://img.rhysperry.com/ArchWallComp/ArchWaveMono.png

ArchWallMonoInverted

I release all the images above into the public domain under the CC0 license.

If you want anything re-rendered just ask.

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Hello there,
Here's a little something I've made a few months ago and use to this day.

Made in AI, quite lightweight, ~50KB@5K resolution.
CC-0 license.

Other resolutions and source available in a repo.

Wallpaperized version (out of contest, I've no idea about the original license and the PNG is almost 10MB, linked jpg is ok-ish 2.3MB)

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

I think PNGs are always preferred. As you said, a 10MB PNG is large, but it is usually easy to fix with GIMP.

You just:
1) Open GIMP
2) File -> Open -> YourImage.png
3) Image -> Precision -> 8-bit Integer
4) Image -> Mode -> Indexed...
5) Maximum number of colors -> (I've found for my images 256 has no visible loss, but you may need to increase above that if your image is more complicated or, if your image only has a few colors you could set it to [amount of colors + 1])
6) Convert
7) File -> Export as...
8) Add desired name and location
9) Export
10) Compression level -> (this is lossless compression, I've found that 5 is a good mix between speed and size)
11) Untick everything except [Save color profile] and [Save resolution]
12) Export

Still 7MB @255 colors…
Since it's not meant a contest contribution, the jpeg should do fine smile

@ewaller, I saw you posted it in another forum and the context suggests that you hold the rights to the photo.
Do you want  to turn this into a serious contest submission?
(Or do you actually hate the variations?)

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Nah, I posted it for fun, not many people are using a vector display on their Arch boxen smile  Yes, I own the rights to the photo, the oscilloscope, arbitrary function generator, and the yard beyond the window.
That picture is an oscilloscope, running in XY mode being fed by a dual channel arbitrary waveform generator.   For fun in the era of Covid, I took the Arch Logo, reduced it to black and white, wrote a python program to identify the coordinates that were "on", picked one, then finds the nearest neighbor pixel, generates a vector between the two, moves to the new point, and repeats until it has generated vectors between all points.  The program then generates parametric equations x(t), and y(t), calculates the wave forms for x(t) and y(t), and fed them to the two channels of the function generator.  My wife looks at it and just shakes her head.

I do like the variations though.  Thank you.

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Hi,

i have two images to offer (how do I do a small preview for an Imgur link?):

gzGUfRP.jpeg

mnIiR51.jpg

The matrix stile picture is made in gimp, ethe background is a screenshot of cmatrix running in my terminal.

The second picture was taken by me and also edited in gimp. I have no knowledge about licensing, but I think they should be fine?

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Thanks again for all the contributions!

I've picked several of the images that were both available as (at least) 5120x2880 and had a CC0 license (either via a link or specified when posting the image). Unfortunately, I could not include the ones that were just a link to an image, since the license is unclear.

I also included the seven landscape photos (posted further up), in .jpg format.

The resulting package is 37M, and includes a selection of 22 images that should provide something for everyone. All images have a resolution of 5120x2880, and the average size for the .png images is just 695k.

I hope you enjoy the resulting collection, or at least think it's an improvement over the previous one. It took some time to put together the collection, and to make sure all the licenses were okay.

If you feel that your image should have been included in the collection, try posting it again in 5120x2880, together with a statement saying which license you choose, and I'll possibly, maybe, include it in the next version of the package (which could be in a week or in a year, we'll see).

I'm happy with the resulting package, but I also really liked several of the images that were not included.

Best regards and pacman -Syu.

Due to the fact I have absolutely no clue about licensing -> I would suggest approving to "CC0 License" (public available and free to use) is sufficient? Do I have to perform further actions or do I just have to commit that I'm fine with that? (That's what I just did),

Thanks, those are beautiful!
Is it possible to get the sources?
I'd like to move the logo around on the background, resize it.

That was quick!
As I said, I'd like to move the logo around on the background.
I'm not sure if the SVG file would allow me to separate the Arch logo from the background? (Actually I think it would)
In raster editing terms, I'd say the logo would have to be a separate layer?

Anyhow, yes, the SVG of this one would be nice.
Thanks.

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Some years ago, I took this photo of a natural rock arch off the small island of Canna, Scotland:

I find the resemblance of this natural arch with the Arch logo quite striking, and I use it as my wallpaper. Here are some renderings with the suggested resolution:

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Can you please revive the old "simply black" wallpaper? It was nice to have a plain, black (not gray like the new "simple" image) background with just the Arch logo.

Re: Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Yes, I can download it from the archive, but I use this across multiple machines and it would be nice if it were distributed in the archlinux-wallpaper package. Otherwise I'm just going to end up sticking it in a private Git repo, which isn't an optimal solution.

I know it sounds like I'm being picky, and I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually liked some of the old wallpapers (yes, yes, I know), and I was surprised to find that they were *removed* without warning and replaced with a completely different set of images.
