Polkit running and installed in i3 but does nothing

I recently switched to i3 and it works wonderfully, however, no matter what flags i put in the config file the polkit does nothing.  The gnome-polkit is running because when i run the polkit in the terminal it says "An authentication agent already exists for the given subject".  When i try running timeshift-gtk it says to run the command with sudo instead of prompting me for the root password. I know it's not the gnome-polkit because it works perfectly in in openbox. What is happening?
This is the line i am running in the config file: exec_always --no-startup-id /usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.
