I am trying to find out what the cause of the problem is - until now I see 2 possible reasons for the problem but I am not sure whether it is a) or b):
a) The motherboard of my laptop does not work properly - somehow it deactivates the HDMI-port or rather it forgets to activate the HDMI-port after wake up
b) There is some bug in my Linux which prevents the system to activate the HDMI-port
What are the symptoms of the "problem"?
- I use additionally to the built-in display an external monitor on my laptop connected via HDMI-cable - in xrandr it is set as DP-2, HDMI-1 is always shown as disconnected. The in-port used in the monitor is the DVI-in-port - concerning the problem I have it doesn't matter, even when I use the HDMI-In-Port of the monitor the problem occurs. The main display of the laptop itself is assigned to eDP-1 in xrandr.
- Sometimes, when I disconnect the HDMI cable and connect it again the external monitor gets not activated.
- After that problem occurs, I have to shut down my laptop and start it again - then the monitor wakes up. A simple reboot does not wake up the monitor. If the problem occurs, the system "forgets" also the display resolution I set before - I have to set it again to 1920x1200 via display configuration in systemsettings
- I can exclude the monitor as the source of the problem as I have a second system with that I tested the wake-up-behaviour of the monitor which works always.
What I did until now to get rid of the problem:
- Firmware-Update BIOS (to HP .09 from HP .05)
- Tried a lot of xrandr / xset commands based on similar problems people discussed about here and in other forums, particularly the following:

640x480 59.94 What I am wondering about is, that when the problem occurs xrandr shows DP-2 as connected even when I disconnect the external monitor - xrandr seems not to get the info that the HDMI cable is unplugged.
Is there an easy way to ensure that it is not the wake-up-behaviour of my linux but the motherboard / intel hda or the nvidia mx250 graphic card which causes the problem? Alternatively could someone help me to find out if everything is ok with my linux?
I would like to avoid sending the device to HP just to find out weeks later that the hardware is not the source of the problem.

What Window Manager are you using? Any custom configuration inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ ? Content from Xorg.0.log could also be of help.
