Xorg using 100% CPU.

Hi, I've been experiencing a problem for a while, that makes my system unusable.

Xorg starts using more and more CPU, until it takes the whole 100% and sistem becomes too laggy to use. It happens even when I have no programs running. For example I only have now this firefox tab and a terminal with `top` running and xorg CPU usage is at 99.7%, and every letter I write takes around two seconds to appear on this textarea.

It doesnt happens all the time, it goes on spikes. It fluctuates between 25% and 100% but sometimes stays a 100% for a minute or more.
Im using Arch with xfce

I'm using the official Nvidia drivers from the official repos, maybe that is related to the issue?

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

Hard to tell.

please post

$ ps -aux

.
How are you starting xfce (startx / xinit , gdm , sddm etc) ?
Did you reboot recently ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

Are you using nvidia drivers and latest 5.9 kernel?

Nvidia doesn`t recomends that until they released a fix.

Not that it nessesary need to be the cause for your problem, but just to be shure, I would try the linux-lts kernel and see if you still experience the same issue.

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

It shouldn't be, normal "desktop" xorg usage is unaffected by the changes that break CUDA and OpenCL

@god123 can you also post a xorg log and

glxinfo -B

? How did you configure the xfwm compositor?

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

Hi, I'm the OP, I'm using another account because I don't have access to the old one right now.

I'm not in front of that computer right now, but I always use lightDM, so thats probably the one I'm using there. I have rebooted and shut it down multiple times, but the problem stays on every single reboot. It works fine for a few minutes and then it starts eating the CPU more and more.

Yes, I', using official nvidia drivers. System was updated every week so I think everything was up to date when I opened the thread. I will try with the lts kernel as soon as I can and post here the results.

Honestly I didn't know what xfwm was until right now that I've googled it. I just installed the xfce4 and xfce4-goodies packages, but I haven't touch any configuration, so it will be on the default values I guess.

Because of the COVID restrictions I don't have access to that computer right now. It is in another town where I can't go because of the lock down. As soon as I can go there, I will post the logs and the outputs here.

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

There's either a bug in Xorg, one of its modules (drivers) or something™ is banging the server w/ requests.

a) Is "official Nvidia drivers from the official repos" https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/nvidia/ or the intaller from www.nvidia.com? (don't use the latter)
b) Do you get the sever load with nouveau?
c) Do you get the server load with a different environment?
   c.1) swapping lightdm for startx/xinit
   c.2) swapping xfce with openbox
   c.3) while firefox isn't running

To make the tests as easy as possible, start by cutting out firefox (try chromium for the time being, they're not gonna have the same bug), then trying openbox, then drop lightdm and only when that doesn't yield any results, switch from nvidia to nouveau.

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

I have a similar problem. Except:
1. I'm using openbox (from inside kde, replacing kwin)
2. It happens on a few sites only. Example, open this in firefox, I get Xorg at 100% cpu: https://advait.live/praise-of-writing/

Any idea what I could try next? This is my system:

Re: Xorg using 100% CPU.

Please do not necrobump a 2 year old thread, a lot has changed in the entire stack and the actual cause and reason can have widely different stipulations now.

Make a new thread, include a xorg log and the output of

glxinfo -B #mesa-utils
xrandr -q

Closing.
