I am trying to install Arch on a Dell Inspiron 1440.
I currently run Manjaro on this machine, and I must pass 'nomodeset' to the kernel to get a full boot.
When I pass 'nomodeset' to the live Arch installer's bootloader it does not seem to recognize it. By that I mean, after the bootloader, I get nothing but a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
Manjaro runs perfectly fine with 'nomodeset' passed via grub.

What release of the Arch ISO?

What video hardware does it have? Is this a recent install media?

the media is 2020.10.01-x86_64
the graphics chip is integrated intel.
interesting to note, I ran this machine without 'nomodeset' for over 9 months. Only upon needing to do a fresh installation of Manjaro (I wanted luks), do I now need to use 'nomodeset.'

Manjaro is not Arch. Which are you trying to install?

Arch. I am simply stating Manjaro runs fine with nomodeset. Arch does not.

If its i915 have you tried i915.modeset=0 as mentioned in Kernel_mode_setting#Disabling_modesetting?

I tried with both nomodeset and i915.modeset=0 and no luck. in my bootable grub conf all I have is nomodeset.

What is the kernel version that can boot? Can the installed system boot using https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/ … kg.tar.zst? which is the kernel version used on the 2020.10.01 Arch ISO.

kernel 5.4.72-1-MANJARO boots.
how do I test the one you linked to?

Does Arch_Linux_Archive#Downloading_packages_from_the_Historical_Archive work?
Edit:
https://www.archlinux.org/releng/releases/ for an Arch 5.4 based ISO you would want 2020.02.01 https://archive.archlinux.org/iso/2020.02.01/

I tested with the latest manjaro kernel (5.8.16-2) and it does not boot.

Ok. The 5.4 kernel Arch ISO boots with nomodeset.
Thank you so much.
Now, does this mean any future upgrades are out of the question on this machine?

Try and find the last kernel version between 5.4 and 5.8 that does work, also try 5.9 to see if the issue has already been fixed.
Edit:
linux-lts is on 5.4.72-1 so you could use that while finding which versions of linux are affected.

I will be installing this weekend. I'll report back what works.
This is why I typically use arch over manjaro, the community support is unmatched.
Thanks.
