Changing the source code of xclock and rebuilding.
I'm curious if it's possible to download the source code for xclock, make a simple change to the code and rebuild the package for use?
Can someone please point me in the right direction?

As for your other question, is 3 months really that old? I suppose, maybe in the Arch world.

The kernel on the 2020.10.01 was 5.8.12, that is not the current kernel which you would obtain installing a system today:
