Sandisk Extreme Pro 2TB 1GBPS SSD freezing intermittently

I just got a 2TB Sandisk Extreme Pro 1GBPS external SSD. When connected to my laptop's USB port (or thunderbolt port), it appears fine, and I can read and write to it. However, every few minutes, it completely freezes. This is while using a file manager like Dolphin, or using an application like Darktable. After a while, the application is "unfrozen", and continues to work as normal, until it freezes again. I also have a 1TB Samsung T5, and it doesn't exhibit such freezing. Running

sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda

I get

/dev/sda:
SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

ATA device, with non-removable media
Standards:

Configuration:
	Logical max	current
	cylinders	0	0
	heads 0	0
	sectors/track	0	0

	Logical/Physical Sector size: 512 bytes
	device size with M = 1024*1024: 0 MBytes
	device size with M = 1000*1000: 0 MBytes
	cache/buffer size = unknown
Capabilities:
	IORDY not likely
	Cannot perform double-word IO
R/W multiple sector transfer: not supported
	DMA: not supported
	PIO: pio0

I don't know where to start in debugging the freezes. Any help is appreciated.

I would start by reading your logs.   Try dmesg and journalctl -b after a freeze.

Hmm... interesting... the freezes only happen when connected to the laptop's thunderbolt port. When connected to a normal USB 3 fat port, it's fine.

I'll try checking journalctl.
