Sound only works while running pulseaudio

When I run pulseaudio from the terminal, as long as I don't kill the process, I can get sound output from my system. Once I exit the program, the sound again doesn't work. I checked via alsamixer, and all of the channels are unmuted.

I do get an error when running pulseaudio:

Now this makes sense as I'm running wayland, but even with gnome on X I still have no sound.

It's pretty puzzling to me. Any suggestions?

Same error shown in journalctl to me, though I have pulseaudio running but still no sound.

It happened after I updated BIOS firmware to v1.7 on my Dell Inspiron 5559 yesterday.

I assume you have a different problem than the OP, but this might be relevant in general, what do you  get for

aplay -lL
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
dmesg | grep -E 'snd|sof'

FWIW that bluez error message is irrelevant if you don't intend to talk to a bluetooth headset.

Well this usually happens if you click the mute button in whatever favorite audio mixer you have. Check your DE's sound settings, or if you want to have something that should generally always work install pavucontrol
