I can get VLC to run from the terminal just fine despite all the errors you'll see below.

Double clicking files in the file browser or the gnome launcher will not open vlc. It's all up to date.
Any help?

Anything in the journal when launching from the app launcher fails? How do you log into gnome? What's your output for
loginctl session-status $XDG_SESSION_ID
printenv | grep DBUSOffline
I'll have to check. I set it up before once and forgot how. I think it was gdm.service, but
systemctl status gdm.service gives
● gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: inactive (dead)so maybe it's something else...
loginctl session-status $XDG_SESSION_IDgives:
http://ix.io/2Cvu
and
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ printenv | grep DBUS
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/1000/busOffline
Double clicking files in the file browser or the gnome launcher
Are you only talking about A/V files or also the vlc desktop icon (that just starts vlc, no file)?
Can you
xdg-open somevideo.mp4?
Whats the output of
strace xdg-open somevideo.mp4 2>&1 | grep desktop?
Online
So usually it's both files in the browser, the gnome launcher icon and the icon in the dock. Weirdly right now it is working, but I've had it work for a little bit and then stop. Usually if I want to open vlc, i just open a terminal, type
vlcand then open the file from within vlc.
HA! in the middle of this post I got it to break. All I did was play a video, then close the window, this leaves the playlist open, which I can also close. Now all the launcher buttons are broken.
xdg-open gives:
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ xdg-open ~/Videos/FUNDAMENTALS/FUNDAMENTALS_t01.mkv
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ VLC media player 3.0.11.1 Vetinari (revision 3.0.11.1-0-g52483f3ca2)but no window.
The second command
strace xdg-open somevideo.mp4 2>&1 | grep desktopgives nothing in the terminal.
I've also noticed, when this happens, if I restart/log out of gnome, I get a pop-up saying "some applications are busy or have unsaved work" then VLC is listed with "playing some media" next to it. However, there's no option to close it if I right click the dock launcher and it doesn't have the little pin of light underneath it, which denotes an open window.
Not sure if it makes a difference, but the video that broke it was playing via NFS

When it's "broken", run
ps aux | grep -i vlcVLC doesn't properly terminate and there's likely a lingering process.
Killing it will probably "fix" it for the moment, but you want to figure why vlc doesn't terminate.
Running it from the terminal and "breaking" it the way you described might get you some debug output.
strace xdg-open somevideo.mp4 2>&1 | grep desktop
Did you literally use "somevideo.mp4"?
Online
lol, no. I do have a ways to go on my linux journey, but here's the terminal:
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ xdg-open ~/Videos/FUNDAMENTALS/FUNDAMENTALS_t01.mkv
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ VLC media player 3.0.11.1 Vetinari (revision 3.0.11.1-0-g52483f3ca2)
^C^C
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ strace xdg-open ~/Videos/FUNDAMENTALS/FUNDAMENTALS_t01.mkv 2>&1 | grep desktop
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ ps aux | grep -i vlc

hugh 9464 0.0 0.0 6324 2260 pts/0 S+ 06:04 0:00 grep -i vlc
[hugh@Squarch ~]$ so yes, lingering process... good to know about ps aux (I'll keep that one in my back pocket).
Still unclear as to how to proceed. Fix it by killing the process.
kill -9 7576 fixes things
Run
strace xdg-open ~/Videos/FUNDAMENTALS/FUNDAMENTALS_t01.mkv 2>&1 | grep desktopBreak it.
Run
strace xdg-open ~/Videos/FUNDAMENTALS/FUNDAMENTALS_t01.mkv 2>&1 | grep desktopagain?

First kill the lingering process, then start vlc from the terminal (eg. /usr/bin/vlc --started-from-file "/home/hugh/bigraid/Video Library/Movies/Thunderball (1965).mkv") and break it again (windows closed but process remains)
Do you get some error messages?
Is the "bigraid/Video Library" maybe on a NAS or other remote storage?
Online
Yes. the raid is NFS storage. So perhaps there's an issue?
No errors if I just run VLC from command line...

No errors if I just run VLC from command line...
With that file?
Try to cause the problem w/ a local file, I assume there's an issue w/ closing the remote file handle.
Output of "mount"? (The NFS mounts are the interesting bits)
Online
Hmm i can try, haven't noticed it from local files, mostly because I don't keep them locally very long.
Here's the mount output:

Yeah I can't break it with local files.

You can ignore xdg-open, the problem is the lingering vlc process.
Were any of the above errors *after* you closed the window, but had the process remaining?
Online
Only this one:
QObject::~QObject: Timers cannot be stopped from another threadI think is the one that shows up when you close the window (you can see it in some of the outputs above). I don't know why I didn't show in that last example.
Thanks again for helping me out. I have to step out, but will do some digging and see what I can find!
