Hi,
I have Arch installed on a VBox VM. Have also installed KDE (plasma-desktop). Installed Firefox, flashplugin as well as codecs as required. Have also installed VLC and MPlayer.
I have ticked Play DRM content in Firefox preferences.
Have also installed VBox Guest additions.
When I navigate to http://www.youtube.com it gives an error saying that "we are having trouble finding that site." All other sites work fine, so it is not internet connectivity issue.
Am I missing anything ?
Appreciate your help
Sachin

To rule out the most obvious things first: isn’t your Firefox using DoH? Some people are experiencing various issues with it. In the preferences: General → Network Settings, unched “Enable DNS over HTTPS” if checked. See if that solves the issue. Note: one should not count that as a problem with DoH itself. It simply just happens in various contexts right now for some providers.
A separate thing: extra/flashplugin is unrelated. It is not neccessary for anything except very poorly designed or unmaintained websites, and the technology itself has been ditched even by Adobe, finally reaching EOL next month.

Firstly apologies for a delayed reply. I am in a different time zone so could see your reply only some time back.
I checked the DoH. I also removed Proxies (earlier it was set to System Proxies). Both do not make any difference (unchecking DoH also has no effect).
Funnily, this behaviour is only with Youtube - I am able to play streaming media on other sites without any issues.
Thank you for all your efforts - much appreciated.

Can you resolve youtube.com from outside of Firefox? E.g. with dig from extra/bind:
dig youtube.com

I am able to ping to youtube.com successfully.
For dig, do I need to install anything ? I had installed kde-desktop with minimal packages.
Thanks and Regards

Yes, for dig you need to install the package I mentioned above. But it is not important now, if you can ping the server — which indicates the name is being resolved.⁽¹⁾
In that case I have no ideas now. Others may help, but tell:
How have you configured network in your VM?
Which DNS server is being used? Is it some popular one or the one supplied by your ISP? If the latter, is changing it to e.g. 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 helping?
____
⁽¹⁾ It may be resolved to a wrong address, but the descibed issue with Firefox indicates a name resolution issue — one step earlier.

After several checks, Youtube still does not work. I am giving up now, but here is the summary of actions I did in case it helps.
1. VM is connected to host as NAT connection.
2. I have set up Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) and Cloudflare as an alternate DNS.
3. Have disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox, cleared cookies and other data, disabled add ons, cleared history.
4. Have tried running Firefox in Safe Mode.
Personal thanks to mpan for all the efforts. Pity it did not work, but that is fine. Really appreciate all your suggestions.
Thanks once again

No need for thanks, as I haven’t solved anything. Suggesting an issue many people experience lately and randomly poking in hope to hit the bug is also hardly a large sacrifice on my side. =)
@3: unrelated. Firefox is clearly failing to translate the domain name to an IP address. That happens long before rendering.
That would be a larger effort and most likely unnecessary if someone else may help, but one thing you may check are packets sent from your computer (the actual host, not the VM). That would at least tell if DNS requests are being sent and if you get responses. But I would rather first wait a moment for other people to cme with ideas.

What about https://www.youtube.com ?

Hi mpan,
I guess in the end a genuine help matters - whether it works or not is something we cant help
Hi Seth,
I have been referring to https://www.youtube.com. Can ping youtube.com successfully.
Just one interesting thing I noticed. When I click on the information button in the browser, it shows that connection not secure. It also shows that the site does not provide any security information. Maybe this is nothing (since the connection is not made), but thought worth mentioning.
Thank you guys
Sachin

Wireshark the connection to see what's going on there (what requests FF makes where that result in the failed resolution)
The mozilla internal whoopsadaisy page is probably not secure and doesn't have to be, but if you get a 404 or 503 (or maybe 502) that should not be insecure.
Can you open youtube in other browsers?
What IP is resolved by "ping youtube.com" and, just in case, what does "ping -6 youtube.com" do?
Does "nmap -p80 youtube.com" report the port to be open?

Hi Seth,
Wow, I am not a tech expert, so you might have to pardon my ignorance, stupid responses .
1. I installed Falkon browser and youtube opens smoothly. The videos play without any lag.
2. ping youtube.com output :
PING youtube.com (142.250.67.238) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from bom07s24-in-f14.1e100.net (142.250.67.238): icmp_seq=1 ttl=118 time=16.0 ms
3. ping -6 youtube.com gives the message that the network is unreachable.
4. nmap output : port is open.
Starting Nmap 7.80 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2020-11-02 20:21 IST
Nmap scan report for youtube.com (142.250.67.238)
Host is up (0.013s latency).
Other addresses for youtube.com (not scanned): 2404:6800:4009:814::200e
rDNS record for 142.250.67.238: bom07s24-in-f14.1e100.net
PORT STATE SERVICE
80/tcp open http
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.18 seconds
Wireshark would take some time for me to understand. Currently reading the documentation.
Does the above help ?
Thanks and Regards
Sachin

142.250.67.238 is a google IP w/ open http port, you simply have no IPv6 connection (that's fine and not a problem at all) and the problem is strictly limited to firefox.
If your ruled out DoH, does it happen w/ https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tr … -safe-mode ?

Hi Seth,
I had a sort of Eureka moment today
Youtube did not open on safe mode as well as private browsing. Then I installed Wireshark, added user to wireshark group and also gave /usr/bin ownership to user. Wireshark capture was still giving an error :
The capture session could not be initiated on interface 'enp0s3' (You don't have permission to capture on that device).
I then started Wireshark in sudo mode. When I navigated to Youtube - voila !!! it opened effortlessly .
So it turns out to be some permissions problem - not sure what it is though.
Any ideas ?
Much appreciate your efforts and help.
Thanks and Regards
Sachin

Hi Seth
Thanks a lot - I was able to start wireshark in a normal use rmode and capture the output when I tried to open Youtube in FF.
The only problem entry I see is the following :
IP4 Source - 10.0.2.15 Destination - 10.0.2.2 Protocol ICMP Length 381 Destination Unreachable (Port Unreachable)
Any other errors I should be looking for ?
Thanks and Regards
Sachin

you simply have no IPv6 connection (that's fine and not a problem at all) and the problem is strictly limited to firefox.
The lack of an ipv6 connection could very well be the cause of the problem as firefox defaults to ipv6 for dns.
Try disabling it.
see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fi … can#w_ipv6

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

Hi,
That was bang on !!!
After disabling IPV6, the site opens flawlessly.
Thank you very much to all of you guys - you are all amazing !!!

So try an IPv6 DNS first and if that fails, just assume NXDOMAIN…
Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Seriously, Seth, mpan and lone_wolf, you guys are amazing. I am just dirtying my hands in Arch and it has been a learning and humbling experience.
Thank you once again.
I have marked the issue solved.
