for the last 24 hours, 80% of the AUR packages I've tried to install have failed their validity checks.
I have been away from Arch for a while. Am I doing something wrong.
They fail with makepkg, with yay, and with trizen.
Furthermore, is there a way to skip the checks all together? I thought I had seen such an option in makepkg.conf but setting it seems to do nothing.

There should be no systemic reason why. What specific packages? Contact the maintainer if you feel there are mistakes. Yes, you can skip checks or just update the checksums yourself. See man makepkg. Search for the work "skip".
