Arch64 working good so far

I just switched from gentoo ~amd64 into arch64 and so far its good.  What bothers me is that the repositories dont have the latest packages like Xorg 7.1, Gnome 2.16, etc... so tonight im going to start to hit those PKGBUILDs in order to get latest versions of some programs and XGL.  But so far so good, it has lived up to the expectation i had having used Archlinux years ago..

Good job!

Re: Arch64 working good so far

I haven't actually used Gentoo, so I'll probably learn things, here.

I guess emerge tends to tell you about the dependencies and make dependencies, if it doesn't actually automate it all for you.

An Arch installation is lean, in comparison; and you do have to trace back and build the dependencies and make sure you have everything needed for your building environment.

I am not sure, either, that the overall mesh of dependencies is identical, as between the 64-bit and 32-bit distros, for these large bundles of software.

If you get these going, then your report on any of the adjustments used would be of assistance, I'm sure.

So, I am not saying there are problems, because I don't have the experience. I am saying, however, that building the system from the bottom up is probably harder in Arch than in Gentoo. I am also saying that the 32-bit  PKGBUILDS do not always carry over for 64-bit, when used as templates.

Good Luck.

Geoff

Re: Arch64 working good so far

The Arch64 repos usually fall behind the offical Arch repos because the x86_64 development teem is just one person.

andyrtr is taking some time off to regain his sanity. When he get's back to work things will start catching up.

Re: Arch64 working good so far

i tried making packages for xgl. its not fun... i used to maintain gnome on arch64 too. the only way thats stuff finds its way into arch64 is if there are pkgbuilds in 32bit arch's cvs. which as far as i know there aren't...

we are not much behind arch32 these days. we already have xorg 7.1 as well.

Nice table AndyPTR! I am assuming where the pkg version for x86_64 is missing, it is the same version as 32 bit, right?

Man, I hadn't realized how up to speed Arch64 is! Great job! I'm almost inspired to reinstall, although I don't know if I could deal with the downtime atm. It'd certainly be nice to try out a 64-bit distro that allows me to roll my own packages (in cases where the official repos don't have a package/are behind for whatever reason) without making me want to gouge my eyes out with a sausage. Of course, I guess there are still the few problems with things like w32-codecs? (/me checks Arch64 FAQ, and confirms). Ah well, perhaps these are the sacrifices one must make to support progress...

You could setup a 32-bit chroot and run those few apps that don't have full 64-bit support from there. This seems to be the "best way" to get a full x86_64 environment and not loose out on 32-bit only apps.

I actually did do that when I ran 64-bit gentoo (*gasp*) a while back; it wasn't the smoothest experience, but I attribute that now to a) the fact AMD64 chips were very new then (so information and support for 64-bit stuff in the desktop linux arena was scarce), b) I was a relative linux neophyte, and c) it was gentoo (;)). I'll probably at least install Arch64 along side my main system sometime soon; I do want to support the Arch64 effort, and I know it can be valuable to devs to have people out there running the system and giving feedback!
