Screen freezes, everything else still running

Hello!
I've been experiencing random freezes in the last couple of weeks. They occur without anything weird from my side.
During these the last image before the freeze stays on the screen, but everything else is controllable, shortcuts work, sound goes on, only the screen stops.
Switching to a tty wtih Ctrl+Alt+Number and then back fixes it (more on this later), quitting out of my session fixes it and restarts fix it.
I just tried the tty method a second ago for the first time and I had issues when getting back to my desktop with another freeze happening a second later and so on until I turned off chromium, so it might have something to do with the issue.

My setup:
lightdm + i3
I have chromium and mopidy with ncmpcpp running

Anyone experienced this before?

What hardware? I know of at least two potential issues with the current nvidia drivers, check the journal from the last boot with 

sudo journalctl -b-1

after rebooting to see if it's a similar issue:

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/4 … /155250/47 - I've never had that second one, apparently it's somewhat prone to happen if you are starved for memory

Neither of these happen on the 440 driver series from what I know (though that one is incompatible/requires an inofficial patch for 5.9 compat)

If you are on intel, remove xf86-video-intel if it's installed

I have the same issue too - my screen will freeze randomly, but however for me switching ttys is unresponsive and is not possible. The only way to resolve my issue for me is to reboot. I have noticed that my screen however most often freezes when I am launching a steam game - but it can also happen just from having steam open. I am using steam-runtime - I originally used steam-native with the same issue.
One thing to note is that for me when my screen freezes everything else continues to run - any audio I have playing continues like nothing has happened.
My GPU is an Asus Cerberus GeForce GTX 1050 Ti if that is relevant.
I am on Gnome with GDM and mutter compositor.

The logs do complain of Xid 79 errors - which could either be a hardware or driver issue, or it could be because of system memory corruption. It could also be a bus error or a thermal issue - the last possible cause however I can rule out since I know that I do not run any GPU intensive applications and I also know that my GPU hasn't ever gone above 65C.

EDIT: As in one of the threads V1del referenced, reverting nvidia drivers back to version 440.100 may fix the issue. I will try it now.
EDIT 2: Looks like I'll have to revert to the newest, drivers, dkms returns a build error 10 with driver version 440.100 and kernel version 5.8.14

Well, a freeze with an Xid 79 error with the GPU performance mode set to "Prefer Maximum Performance" has invalidated that solution.

It's the second time I encounter this bug. Every time, It was happening when I copied huge files. To unfreeze my display, I kill the X server with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

My freezes were fixed by a reseating of my GPU and RAM followed by a resetting of the CMOS. Other people can try it and see if it works. I also cleaned the dust out of my DIMM and PCI-e slots - not sure if that helped, but it could help someone else.
