Noitce the bad checksums for

/dev/nvme0n1p6

, the root partition.

Here is my partition layout, in case it is useful:

$ sudo fdisk /dev/nvme0n1

Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.36).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.

Command (m for help): q

Anyway, after seeing those bad checksums I decided to reboot. It booted into a console I've never seen before (probably single-user mode?) and asked me to run

fsck

, so I did. A lot of directories are missing

..

, a lot of wrong/inefficient cluster/block sizes (I forgot what it was exactly), and a lot of files put into

/lost+found

. After that I just exit and it automatically rebooted.

Most of everything looks fine after rebooting. It doesn't look like there is anything important in the

/lost+found

directory. The only major problem that I noticed was

pacman

acting up:

$ sudo pacman -Syu

I looked into

/lost+found

again, but couldn't find the

Nothing seems too out of the ordinary, but oh... more files are missing and this time they are kernel modules... (Unlike the package description files, I think I found these kernel modules in the lost and found but I'm not bothering putting them back right now because I am not sure which is which and it doesn't seem to be too critical since everything else is working fine)

I decided to check the output of

Again, nothing seems out of the ordinary...

I noticed there is an Intel microcode update queued, but I think there was one recently. I checked

/var/log/pacman.log

, and, indeed, it had an update yesterday and now it has another one so quickly, which I think is unusual and strange. Might there have been a bug in the microcode that caused such a filesystem corrupted?

I can't think of anything else...

Before this boot, yesterday, I uninstalled

NetworkManager

and

dnsmasq

and installed/enabled

iwd

,

dhcpcd

, and

systemd-resolved

because it was easier to setup

openvpn

considering DNS leaks. So I did mess with configuration files, but I don't see how anything I did would cause filesystem corruption.

I haven't booted into the OpenBSD or Windows 10 partition in a while, so I don't think they messed the Linux partition. The Windows 10 partitions were pre-installed, I moved them and shrunk with gparted live. The Linux partition was done by following the installation instructions on the ArchWiki. The OpenBSD partition was created about 2 or 3 weeks ago using Arch Linux's

fdisk

, then the OpenBSD installer found it and used

disklabel

on it to create "labels" (which I think are just partitions within the OpenBSD partition---not too proficient with OpenBSD). I'm pretty sure it wasn't OpenBSD that messed up the Linux partition because I'm pretty sure I verified that the start sector and end of "OpenBSD area" in

disklabel

was indeed the OpenBSD partition.

Does anyone have any idea what caused this filesystem corruption or what other logs I should check? Is there an easy way to "fix" it now? I tried reinstalling all my packages but the

--force

option seems to be removed.

If there is no easy way, I might do a fresh install (maybe this time on zfs), but I really want to know what went wrong so history doesn't repeat itself hmm .

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] EXT-4 Filesystem got Corrupted and Broke my Install (why?)

Only assumption is that you have 172 unsafe shutdowns, and this looks like a prompt poweroff without syncing the data to the ext4, but that’s just an assumption.

Does nvmes allow for smart tests? If so do a quick short test, and later do a memtest before sleeping (leave memtest iterating for the night) to rule out RAM issues.

I think most of those come from me experimenting with different Linux distros/operating systems and getting crashes where I don't have any choice but to force shutdown. Eventually I stuck with Arch and only had a couple of unsafe shutdowns since.

GaKu999 wrote:

I don't think they do. I tried using

nvme-cli

instead, but after some searching, it appears my hardware doesn't support it:

$ sudo nvme device-self-test /dev/nvme0n1
NVMe status: INVALID_FIELD: A reserved coded value or an unsupported value in a defined field(0x2)
GaKu999 wrote:

Will do tonight. I think I need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/memtest86-efi/ but after that I'm not sure what to do. Never done a memtest before. I think I need to add a entry to grub and boot to it. I'll figure it out later; having internet problems right now and can't even download it...

Thanks for the response

Edit:
From what I can tell, there is only the "free" proprietary memtest86-efi available for UEFI systems. I managed to download it and it appears to be limited to 4 passes. I'll do all 13 tests with the max 4 passes tonight and come back. If there are no errors and I don't know how to "fix" my installation, I think will just reinstall.

Re: [SOLVED] EXT-4 Filesystem got Corrupted and Broke my Install (why?)

Finished the memtest and there are no errors, so I have no idea what caused the corrupted. Might be one of the unsafe shutdowns hiding itself for a while or something...

I managed to "fix" my installation by following this advice: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1724969 , then I reinstalled all packages to make sure nothing else was missing: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … l_packages

I decided to do a fresh install anyway, just in case this problem crops back up...

I'm not sure if I should mark this as solved or not (technically its not solved because I was asking for the reason why my filesystem got corrupted and I still don't know why).

EDIT:
I actually did a fresh install on BTRFS because ZFS looked like it would be a bit of a pain on Arch. Anyway, I think I will just call this a hardware problem. I think I've been extra careful, making snapshots, doing a scrub once a week, etc., but, again, it somehow got corrupted. I never got any errors until today where I got uncorrectable errors, and I can't think of a reason why other than hardware problems...
