[SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

Good morning

Recently I've had issues with my GPU, that would not start when I tryied to play a game. It was solved in here => Arch Linux Forums. The solution was to use of

prime-run

to run any game. After that, the FPS issue was solved.

However, recently, I was playing Minecraft, when all of the sudden, the laptop screen went all black. The laptop did not turn off, just went completely black. According to my computer specs I should not have any issue when running that game. I thought it was just a bug and ignored it. Yesterday, I was playing cs:go through Steam, and yes, using

prime-run

prefix. In the middle of the match the screen freezed completely. Again, I should not have any issues considering the specs I have. I thought I could have been some sort of system error, so I tried to run the following:

[lucas@lucas ~]$ systemctl --failed
  UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
0 loaded units listed.

Both commands above were found in here => https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … for_errors.
I made my research about the found errors, and apparently, they are all known and harmless. So I installed

nvtop

, to check how the GPU was doing when I ran those games. It was using 100% of it self, which, according to my research, is normal. The other data also looked very reasonable. Down goes my

neofetch

output:

[lucas@lucas ~]$

PS: Both times I was forced to hold the power button to turn off the computer, which counted as a reboot in the

journalctl

.

If got everything correctly, there's no error in the system nor in the GPU, but its just my guess. Any help is welcome, thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

After rebooting from such a crash, what's your output for

sudo journalctl -kb-1

It happened yesterday, so I slightly modified the command:

UPDATE:

So, after analyzing the output above, I looked after the ERROR. It seems to be something related to microcode (a code that releases updates regarding security and stabuility to CPUs). More info: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode
By following the link above I've installed this 2 pacman packages: iucode-tool and intel-ucode. Both were necessary to see if there was any upload to be made. In the

Detecting available microcode update

section, so I did it:

If an update is available, it should show up below selected microcodes

[lucas@lucas ~]$ modprobe cpuid

If I got everything right, I should make this updates. I will do them and try to perform some tests, to see if I run across some other bug/error again. I've look into other threads regarding this issue, and aparently, this has no 'general fix', so its kinda different depending on the mahcine.

Re: [SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

I've followed the tutorial in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode (I use GRUB).
In order to confirm, I did:

[lucas@lucas ~]$ dmesg | grep 'microcode'
[ 0.000000] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0xe0, date = 2020-07-08
[ 0.698265] microcode: sig=0xa0652, pf=0x20, revision=0xe0
[ 0.698418] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.2.

However, I still receive:

[lucas@lucas ~]$ modprobe cpuid
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'cpuid': Operation not permitted
[lucas@lucas ~]$ sudo !!
sudo modprobe cpuid
[sudo] senha para lucas:
[lucas@lucas ~]$ sudo modprobe cpuid
[lucas@lucas ~]$ bsdtar -Oxf /boot/intel-ucode.img | iucode_tool -tb -lS -
iucode_tool: system has processor(s) with signature 0x000a0652

[lucas@lucas ~]$

I'm not sure if it worked.

Re: [SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

If you get that first line, it worked.

However I don't quite see the inherent inference between microcode updates and the i915 error present in the log. But if it did fix the issue then that's good. Atomic failures in i915 could just be a bug in the intel kernel driver. FWIW I've primarily seen that in conjunction with the xf86-video-intel xorg ddx, is that installed? And can the bug no longer be reproduced if you remove that?

Re: [SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

xf86-video-intel is not installed, xorg is though. Maybe installing it will fix the issue?

Re: [SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

Unlikely, it's often more reason for issues, and technically the offloading logic has mostly been tested with the built-in modesetting driver. But you might give it a shot YMMV

Re: [SOLVED] Issues regarding games execution

After some extra research I found this articles:
https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/int … pdate.html
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … flickering

The first article suggested updating the microcode + disabling PSR. In the Arch Wiki I found only the second suggestion as an available fix (maybe update the wiki?):

Panel Self Refresh (PSR), a power saving feature used by Intel iGPUs is known to cause flickering in some instances FS#49628 FS#49371 FS#50605. A temporary solution is to disable this feature using the kernel parameter i915.enable_psr=0.

I've done both, I'll do some tests and post the results in here.

This seems to have solved the issue, closing the thread.
