[SOLVED] XPS15 9500 running Hot & WIFI Problems

Hey fellas,

I'm running arch on my XPS15 9500 with xmonad.
I noticed that when I plug in my laptop to the power supply, it starts running hot, and the fans turn on after some time. It has to be something with the GPU, since there is no load on the CPU when it happens. Additionally, and this is even weirder, I noticed considerable slowdowns on my WIFI connection when the laptop is connected to a power supply, the second I disconnect the power, the WIFI is at its normal speed again.

Does somebody recognize this problem, or knows how to debug something like this?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [SOLVED] XPS15 9500 running Hot & WIFI Problems

I've got the same machine you have, and used to have some issues with it running hot that I've managed to fix pretty well.

I use Nvidia-xrun and bbswitch to completely power off the NVIDIA GPU unless I'm specifically wanting to use it. I've found leaving it on can generate unnecessary heat, and it slashes battery life.

I don't have any of the issues you describe with power cable being plugged in or not. However, I believe there are some options in the BIOS for performance vs thermal profile section that can vary depending on if the machine is plugged in or not, which I'd recommend checking out.

Re: [SOLVED] XPS15 9500 running Hot & WIFI Problems

I tested some GPU configurations, but none of them helped, so I guess the problem resides somewhere else.
Could it be a power management misconfiguration for the iwlwifi or something similar?

EDIT: I just did a internet speed test while on ac power, and I noticed that only the download seems to be affected, upload is still at full speed. The download seems kind of "jerky"  and jumps between very slow speeds when doing the speedtest by ookla.

EDIT2: I switched the charging port, all while doing speed tests. The laptop has 3 Thunderbold 3 ports, all of which support charging. It looks like the rear left port affects internet speed most while the right port affects it the least. I'm begging to think this might be a hardware problem, even though I can hardly believe that.
