Hello everyone. I am trying to run Arch on a Dell Poweredge R720 server and I cannot boot without
acpi=offThe kernel seems to hang at ~13sec after loading and I never get a login prompt zfs password prompt. The blinking loading dash continues to blink i.e. this does not seem like a hard lock.
The system worked as expected with Centos 8. Dell R720, 2x Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2, 256GB RAM, Dell H310 HBA in IT mode.

Do you get any messages after booting into it properly again and checking the preceeding boot's journal with e.g.
sudo journalctl -b-1? Alternatively boot with loglevel=7 to check whether something pops up during an actual attempt

I cannot check the journal. The root is on an encrypted ZFS dataset so I do not get the unlock prompt and thus the journal does not get updated.
I am booting with ignore_loglevel and nothing seems out of the ordinary.

Just made a new Arch install on a second SSD. This install is normal EXT4 with partitions while the problematic one is on ZFS. The EXT4 install boots fine and ACPI seems to work correctly. What am I missing here?

OK I made some progress. Let me explain:
I am running my root on an encrypted ZFS dataset that requires me to input the password to unlock.
In order to be able to unlock it remotely, I have installed tinyssh in the initramfs as per the Arch Wiki and I need to get the network up in the initramfs so I can unlock it through SSH.
My kernel params right now are:
root=ZFS=rpool/enc/ROOT acpi=off module_blacklist=iomemory_vsl ignore_loglevel ixgbe.allow_unsupported_sfp=1 ip=:::::eth2:dhcpThe problem seems to be related to both ACPI and the need to have the network on in the initramfs. If I remove the acpi=off parameter from the kernel and I also remove the ip=:::::eth2:dhcp parameter, then the system takes me to the ZFS password prompt successfully and I can unlock the ZFS filesystem and then log into my account just fine.
My kernel parameters on Centos are:
root=ZFS=rpool/enc/ROOT rd.neednet=1 ip=dhcp crashkernel=auto rd.auto rhgb consoleblank=0 intel_iommu=on iommu=ptOn Centos I was not using tinyssh and mkinitcpio-netconf but I was using this: https://github.com/gsauthof/dracut-sshd with the Dracut command line parameters alternative method.
Possibly, the rd.neednet=1 parameter being the key.

OK, I have managed to recreate the problem with plain Arch on EXT4, no ZFS stuff.
The problem lies with the mkinitcpio-netconf module. If I include the netconf hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf together with ip=:::::eth2:dhcp kernel parameter I get no boot. I have to use acpi=off, remove the ip kernel parameter or remove the netconf hook to achieve successful boot. Nothing gets written to the journal on failed boots for some reason.

Any ideas on how to investigate further? Should a bug report be filed?
Edit: The issue is that Arch expects predictable interface names while netconf requires traditional interface names. Kudos to u/MrAbzDH on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … &context=3
net.ifnames=0is a workaround by using traditional interface names. There is no mention that I could find about this in the Wiki either on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ZF … ypted_root or https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm … yssh,_ppp).

Edit: This did not work for me. I tried to move from a busybox initramfs to a systemd initramfs only to discover that the required module for zfs on systemd initramfs (mkinitcpio-sd-zfs) does not support native ZFS encryption. This might work for people with LUKS.
Ultimately, my solution was to ditch mkinitcpio altogether and use dracut. I was using dracut with Centos and it seems much more capable of handling -at least- ZFS encrypted datasets.
What you need to make dracut work with this is:
dracut, obviously
systemd-networkd, not really needed but is my prefered way to handle networking. It is used to handle networking in early user space.
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/dracut-sshd-git/ to handle the unlocking of the ZFS dataset through ssh
