[SOLVED] Printer ignores settings

Hi everyone,

Recently I've moved from Ubuntu to Arch and I was doing ok until I tried to print something. I followed the instruction here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS and looked here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … leshooting but couldn't find any solution to my problem.

My printer is Brother DCP-385C. Because drivers for this model were not present in AUR I followed this guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … er_drivers. I've printed the test page and everything seemed to be ok so I've uploaded the packages https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/brot … -cups-bin/ and https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/brot … c-lpr-bin/. A few days later I've tried to print some pictures onto Photo Paper so I went to evince and the quality to Highest and the paper to Photo Paper but the printer printed out with normal quality. It definitely worked on Ubuntu so it's probably possible to make it work on other distros.

I can see my printer listed there but I don't know how to set the printing with custom options from there.

If you select the printer you get a dropdown menu labeled "Management" (or similar) and there you can set the defaults.
(No that's not practical, but will tell us whether it works at all)

I've noticed a strange line:

I've checked and there is no such file. There is brdcp385crc but without the .old suffix.

The config certainly looks interesting and is perhaps used by the /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperdcp385c filter
"cannot open file" could indicate a permission problem (that may extend to the not-old version)

It's readable for all but possible attempted to be written by the filter - what if you put it "666"?
(Does the error message disappear and what if you also loosen permissions for the non-old version?)

Let's see whether the file has any relevance.
Try to change

ColorOrMono=Color

to

ColorOrMono=Mono

and see whether you're printing B&W now.

It indeed makes the printer print in B&W. I've tried changing the printing resolution there too and it also affects the printing, taking precedence over the settings chosen in evince.

The printer refuses to accept job after I've suid /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperdcp385c. There is error in error log stating:

Now everything worked fine. I've noticed that user cups created the file brdcp385crc (all other files including brdcp385crc before printing were created by root).

So that path needs to be writable by cups - you could chown it to cups:users and make it 755 in your PKGBUILD.
