[SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

Hi. This is the journalctl -b:
http://sprunge.us/SHdbnP

Updated a couple of days ago and now i see the mouse pointer for a second on a blank screen and then nothing, the display goes black.

Already reinstalled mesa, gnome, gdm. Also used lxdm to get a login, nothing. Already tried GDM with the EnableWayland=False. I also enabled the log, but there is nothing in /var/log/gdm

I almost ditched Arch (after 8 years) to install Debian but I realized I have a lot of files and work put in the system, need to fix it!

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

There's a bazillion debug lines from GDM in that journal (possibly because you enabled the log or because gdm interprets the "loglevel=3" in that way) - it'd probably be helpful to have a "clean" journal with basic GDM debugging to get an oversight on what's going on there.

Also try the  LTS kernel - both display servers, GDM & lxdm affected in the same way smells like a problem in the amdgpu kernel module.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

Dec 04 17:34:13 xiridio dhcpcd[361]: dhcpcd-9.3.4 starting

Dec 04 17:34:13 xiridio NetworkManager[360]: <info> [1607114053.6689] hostname: hostname: using hostnamed

Looks like you are running 2 conflicting network management tools, that is asking for trouble.
It's probably unrelated to starting GUI problem though.

Your videocard appears to be initialised rather late, that could have to do with the problems.

- boot to multi-user.target / console[1] instead of a display manager
- verify if you have xorg-xinit , xorg-twm, xorg-xclock and twm installed. if not, install them.
- login as user
- configure ~/.xinitrc [2]
- run startx
- if you see 3 terminal windows, a clock and a mouse pointer your X setup is functional
- to get out of the minimal X, execute exit in the top left terminal window.

- post xorg log and lspci -k

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

Here is lspci:
https://termbin.com/2ubf

No sucess with xorg.
Installed and switched to LTS kernel, no luck.

Here is journal -b with no logging enable in GDM:
https://termbin.com/31w4

Tried to run gdm or lxde manually with startx /usr/bin/gnome-session and startxlde and I get:

gnome: unable to connect to X server
lxde: cannot open display

Upgraded mesa to 20.3, the very latest which I got from the Arch Archives because was not yet in my servers and did not help.

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

You have tried with startx without any parameters ?

Even if it fails, the log from that would be very useful.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

Thanks worlf, but there is no log in /var/log nor ~/.local/share/xorg. On this last one had a log but was old, from october.

I also used locate to find Xorg.0.log and found one of february in /var/lib/gdm/.local/share/xorg

Deleted all old logs are none are re-generated.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

GDM stores the Xorg log in the journal.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome on X nor Wayland not starting.

With the help of @Namaragon of the Freenode chat I managed to get this working.

The main issue here was some faulty installed/updated xorg-server xorg-server-common xorg-server-xwayland packages which I checked with Pacman -Qkk (all the packages displayed the file count but these tree, which showed "no mtree file").

We also made sure the amdgpu was in the kernel, by adding the module in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and then running mkinitcpio -P. But I think the main issue was the corrupt packages.

I'd like to thanks Namaragon for his/her patience and zen-mastery. And also you guys!
