Lenovo AMD T14 Thinkpad + 2 monitors via USB-C dock Gen2

Hey so I have the [Thinkpad Gen2 USB Type-C Dock](https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad- … 400&sr=8-3) and trying to hook up two 27" monitors.

One is a [LG 4K UHD 27UD88-W](https://www.amazon.com/LG-27UD88-W-LED- … B01CDYB0QS) at 60hz and the other is [LG 27GL83A-B 27 Inch Ultragear QHD](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YG … UTF8&psc=1) at 144hz.

I have a Displayport 1.4 cable going to the 4k LG and HDMI 2.0 cable going to the 1440p LG.

When I boot into Windows10 everything works flawlessly, 144hz on 1440p monitor and 60hz on 4k.

For some reason the dock is giving me issues in Arch Linux tho (i3wm). Using arandr to enable the monitors works but it will not let me have both monitors on at the same time as well as never letting me have 4k resolution on the 4k monitor (highest it let's me do on 4k monitor is 1440p res).

This is the message that arandr and xrandr send me after trying to turn on both monitors or set the proper 4k resolution on the 4k monitor:

XrandR failed:

XRandR returned error code 1: b'xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed\\n'

I have tried sending xrandr manual commands as well but all xrandr sends back to me is "xrandr: Configre crtc 1 failed"

Re: Lenovo AMD T14 Thinkpad + 2 monitors via USB-C dock Gen2

I'm thinking about getting this same dock. I was reading the specs. It should support your monitors. I can possibly give you a few ideas:
1. make sure you are connecting the dock to the thunderbolt-enabled USB-C ports on the laptop and using a good thunderbolt-capable cable. EDIT: only applies to Intel devices and Thunderbolt docks as vladmyshchuk mentioned.
2. make sure the power adapter for the dock is at least 135W.
3. make sure the dock firmware is updated.

To update the dock firmware, you can update the laptop firmware with the dock connected (at least for the Gen 1 docks).

EDIT: this question wasn't about Thunderbolt docks. But I'll leave this part of my reply here:
Some Intel ThinkPads have USB-C ports that are not Thunderbolt capable. (EDIT: and current generation AMD chipsets do not support Thunderbolt at all.) The Thunderbolt-capable ports have a thunderbolt icon next to them.

Hope that helps.

Are you sure we are talking about the same dock? My USB-C Gen2 dock (40AS0090US) seems to have come with only a 90W power adapter.

Also AMD versions of the T14 do not support thunderbolt 3 unfortunetly hence why I went with the Type-C dock 40AS0090US

I edited my post. I wasn't paying attention to the fact that your question was not about Thunderbolt docks.

My experience was with the Thunderbolt 3 Gen 1 dock (40AC) and Intel Thinkpads. It may or may not apply to you.

My dock also came with a lower wattage power supply. When I switched to the 135W power adapter, the problems went away. External monitors seem to require higher wattage power supplies, and my experience suggests this might be related to your problem but due to the differences in equipment, I can only guess.

After a lot of troubleshooting on different ThinkPads and various Lenovo dock types, I always use the higher wattage power supplies now and things generally work much better.
