I'm hopeful someone might have a suggestion as to why this is. Every time the fans need to come on they go from 0%->100%, then go to the speed they want. Searching for solutions has just led me to people with either no fans, or max fans, but not this case directly.
I ran a loop watching the fan speed (/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon5/fan1_input) every 1/2 second and it looks like:

I'm not running anything like fancontrol. Everything I can find related to pstates or fan is all set to auto.
The system is a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen.
I'm guessing I could work around this with something that would override the system fan control, but ideally I'd like to keep something as critical as fan control as idiot proof as possible.
Any suggestions?
