I am not using pulseaudio; I adjust sound through alsamixer. Normally I run with master at twenty, headphones at full, speakers on mute. However, while I was using the laptop, I found, suddenly, that I could not hear anything. I raised master to 100, and could still only hear audio faintly. I followed the steps in the wiki for low volume, which added a preamp control, but raising that only distorts the sound, does not make it louder. Headphones work fine through my phone. Sound through speakers is also normal. I have also tried changing sound card from default to HDA Intel PCH, no effect. Help, anyone?

What does "suddenly" mean? If you haven't changed anything in the software config it's often HW, can you check the same set of headphones on another system you know "should" work? Otherwise potentially kernel/firmware related did you update something here between "working" and "suddenly quiet" ?

Okay... so this is weird. I hadn't updated, done anything, changed anything, when they stopped working. I tested on my phone, they were working. I updated, rebooted, changed the config, rebooted still the same problem. Just now, I decided to try them on a windows dual boot. They worked there, and now they are working here too. I don't know what caused all this, but it's fine now. Sorry I bothered you.

As you mention a dual boot, have you ensured to disable fast boot? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Du … ibernation
That can often have an effect here if that isn't the case. If this is [SOLVED] please mark it as such by appending your title in the first post.

I don't think I have fast boot disabled, I just changed the boot order to load grub by default, but I'll keep that in mind, in case I face this problem again. Thanks!
