I think that your camera is not seeable as USB flash device (as my Powershot S60). You can use gphoto to download images.

I think Canon cameras only support PTP protocol not usb mass storage. You could see if your camera has an option to switch between the two modes. A few very nice KDE/GNOME apps are in the repos and AUR that support getting pictures off of this sort of device.
