Weird NVIDIA Wine error

I was starting a game (Total War Rome 2) with wine and after attempting to start a game ran into several problems relating to graphics, namely it, according to the game, "Running out of VRAM". After starting the game with the command line i quickly found out that the game is not running out of VRAM but is getting GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY errors relating to the CPU address space. I checked and i was also not runnning out of RAM. While these errors can be avoided by turning down the graphics quality i got a very weird error message when i tried running starting a game:

The NVIDIA driver was unable to open 'libnvidia-glvkspirv.so.455.45.01'. This library is required at run time.

I checked and this library is installed with nvidia-utils and lib32-nvidia-utils.
Is this a common issue? I tried forcing the game to use OpenGL but the game just ignored this.

Thanks for any help

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

So it's a sane nvida GL installation…

libnvidia-glvkspirv.so is a vulkan library, do you configure the game to use vulkan and can you configure it to something else?
Does it offer to display the used GL driver? (Or are you running it on Direct3D?)

What's the output of "vulkaninfo"? Same error?

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

When i run vulkaninfo i do get this error, but i do also get all the info:

ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : /usr/lib32/amdvlk32.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32

The game is using DirectX. I tried forcing it to use OpenGL but it doesnt seem to work.

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

That's the AMD vulkan library from lib32-amdvlk - why is that even installed? Do you also have an AMD GPU?
You may face https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vu … kan_driver resp. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vu … initialize

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

I don't know - i never installed that lib myself. Probably some dependency that pulled it in? Uninstalled it with pacman and it didn't complain about dependencies at all. Still have to try that game again, but im not entirely convinced this is the problem - the driver said it couldn't find a file that was there, and it was correctly identifying the nvidia driver and GPU.

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

edit: the following is just about the video memory issue:
--
According to dxvk main developer and to the nvidia developer themselves, their driver has a bad, bad memory managment.
I wouldn't be surprised if what you are facing depends on that.
I've had several problems with that, including:
Games not launching randomly when video memory is fragmented
Games crashing when video memory was full
...thennvidia devs tried to use system ram and i've got:
Games performing incredibly bad when video memory was full

Now i finally switched to amd and can confirm that amdgpu driver manages the memory resources far better.
Night and day.

Does it happen every time? Even immediately  after a reboot?

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

Huh, didn't know that. I haven't tried it after a reboot - if its true that its the terrible memory management i might try and force the game even harder to use OpenGL.

Edit: I checked the Github issues of DXVK and i found a "Out of Address space" Megaissue, which is the exact problem i had. Im pretty sure my Nvidia driver might still be a problem - I dont get this error launching the game at minimum settings but do get the Nvidia error - but I thought this was quite relevant.

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

The nvidia vulkan library isn't even loaded in your case, so while it might lead to further issues down the road, it's very unlikely the immediate cause.

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

I tried opening the game again, this time after resetting everything to defaults, and before the Nvidia driver complains there are a lot of those GL errors...

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

I talked about dxvk just as an example of memory managment problems, but unfortunately it is not limited to Vulkan.
For the record, Feral's port of Deus ex Mankind Divided uses opengl and just crashes here and there when memory is full.
(nvidia acknowledged the issue to be a problem with his driver).

The problem here could be unrelated tho.

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

Weird.
I tried forcing the game to use OpenGL again, but it still doesnt work. In fact, the game never even seems to read the preferences file (it didn't exist when I first started the game) so I have my doubts I will get this to work. I also noted that i always seem to get a different error when i load into a campaign - this time i got a Wine VirtualAlloc error.

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. … &iId=28925

What works

Singleplayer. Performance is good.

What does not

OpenGL renderer not enabled by default.

Workarounds

Forced OpenGL renderer by settting gfx_device_type to 2 in drive_c/users//Application Data/The Creative Assembly/Rome2/scripts/preferences.script.txt

Re: Weird NVIDIA Wine error

Shameful update: turns out i was not using dxvk. Game actually starts a campaign using it. Not going to say it will work for a long duration of time, but i dont get a Nvidia driver error with it.

Edit: only now saw seths reply. Yeah, thats exactly what i did. Tried both preferences_script.txt and preferences.script.txt, none worked.
