[SOLVED] lightdm can start manually but systemctl fails w/ X segfault

Hello! I am running Arch on a ThinkPad x1 Carbon with Intel 620 integrated graphics. lightdm fails to start on system boot, causing systemctl to hang at either "Started Accounts Service" or "Reached Target Graphical Interface." However, if I switch to another tty and execute

sudo systemctl restart lightdm

then lightdm will start normally with no apparent issues. Also, if I induce a delay to systemctl by going out of range from my default WiFi network (which causes it to spend extra time searching for the network), then systemctl will be able to start lightdm normally.

Here is /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log.old (since I've restarted systemctl manually, /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log just logs a successful session):

Here is my /etc/x11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf:

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Intel Graphics"
	Driver "intel"
	Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
EndSection

So far, I have unsuccessfully attempted the following:

  • Reinstall xf86-video-intel and lightdm.

  • Add

    logind-check-graphical=true

to the [LightDM] section of /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. lightdm started correctly the first time I rebooted after making this change, but has failed every time since.

  • Try using lightdm-webkit2-greeter instead of lightdm-gtk-greeter. Behavior is identical as far as I can tell.

  • Change /etc/x11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf to add the line

    Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"

At a glance, this produced identical results, except that the frame rate of lightdm-webkit2-greeter dropped to about 5-10 FPS.

  • Check for the issue described in the ArchWiki LightDM page under "Boot hangs on OK - Reached target Graphical Interface." /etc/nsswitch.conf does not contain "ldap" anywhere in the file, and I do not recall editing it.

Thank you for your help! If there is any other information I can provide, please let me know.

X.Org X Server 1.20.9

Can you reproduce the issue on a fully updated system?

Interestingly, that fixed it! I'd previously (weeks ago) tried a full system update to no avail, but after doing it now I can no longer reproduce the issue. Thank you!
