Re: Audio problems - Have to reboot several times to get sound

Lots of things weird here right from the getgo and you haven't even shown output for the problem case. Your intended to be used output sink is muted, unmute that, but deadbeef is not using it - so it isn't configured to use the pulse backend, do that, so it's likely that you have a few things that are potentially blocking ALSA for future applications, which might be a hint to install pulseaudio-alsa.

What's the output of these commands during the not working case? educated guess, do you have a modprobe config trying to enforce certain indices and what does it look like/can you avoid the problem if you remove it? Otherwise all the outputs you posted plus

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
dmesg | grep -E 'snd|audio'

during "not working"

Re: Audio problems - Have to reboot several times to get sound

Probably caused by me trying to fix it.  I have:

options snd_hda_intel power_save=0
# Intel PCH
#options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto vid=8086 pid=9c20 pid=8ca0 snoop=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto vid=8086 pid=8ca0 snoop=0
# Intel HDMI
options snd-hda-intel index=1 model=auto vid=8086 pid=0a0c
options snd-hda-intel model=auto indep_hp = true%

Will comment it all out.

Re: Audio problems - Have to reboot several times to get sound

vid and pid are invalid parameters for snd_hda_intel and don't do anything and all the options will be combined. I doubt that any of what you are doing here is necessary what's your intention behind disabling snoop? That's mic support afaik, if you really don't want it a plain and simple

options snd_hda_intel power_save=0 snoop=0

the only parameter you likely actively want to set is power_save=0 as that can lead to crackling on certain chipsets.

Re: Audio problems - Have to reboot several times to get sound

If you really need to set up the order of PCH and HDMI audio, then specify the parameters once and separate the values with commas like so:

options snd-hda-intel id=PCH,HDMI index=0,1
modinfo snd_hda_intel wrote:

parm:           index:Index value for Intel HD audio interface. (array of int)
parm:           id:ID string for Intel HD audio interface. (array of charp)

As far as I know this still doesn't change the order in which the actual devices are enumerated but just sets the ID relevantly so it can happen that you end up with the HDMI device named "PCH" and the analog device named "HDMI" depending on what the system actually detects first.

Re: Audio problems - Have to reboot several times to get sound

RIght, that doesn't work. You can switch the position with "index=1,0", but you cannot force one index for a specific device to resolve the detection race.
