After changing X mode/rate, can't restart LXDE [solved]

Hi, recently after upgrade I have a problem of flickering.  So I played around with xrandr to try different settings within LXDE.  Unfortunately I ended up with a setting that gave "frequency out of range" error of the monitor.  So I killed Xorg, restarted it with xinit (so far, so fine) and started LXDE with

startlxde

from xterm.  But then I get black screen.

i) if I log in from another account, LXDE starts fine.
ii) removing ~/.config/lxsession, ~/.config/lxpanel, /.config/openbox didn't solve the problem
iii) adding a xrandr command with "usable" configuration parameter in ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart didn't solve the problem
iv) there is a line

[ 85426.523] (II) intel(0): resizing framebuffer to 8x8

that appears in Xorg.log only when I get this problem (i.e. when I log in from my main account and try to start LXDE).  Would anyone know how to solve this?

Well, it sufficed to launch lxpanel, from which I could "change" the monitor setting and "save" it.  Just in case someone has the same problem...
