mouse pointer freeze Thinkpad T450 with Linux 5.10.4

I have a couple of Thinkpads running Arch - a T430s and a newer T450s. The 430 is fine with the latest kernel, but the 450 is anything but.

I saw a few problems with 5.10.3, but they were not constant - usually rebooting would clear them, With 5.10.4, nothing helps...

Initially, when lightdm started, it was running in a very low resolution mode (the 450 is 19200x1080 native, but was coming up in what looked like 640x480). If I completed the login, the resolution would go to normal, but the mouse pointer would be frozen. In addition, I would be unable to get to any of the virtual consoles - no matter which one I tried, I would get a blinking cursor, nothing else.

Following a suggestion I stumbled across, I tried removing Xf86-video-intel. That got me a bit further - I could at least get to a virtual console and shutdown cleanly. Still the same mouse cursor freeze.

Running the lts kernal or downgrading to 5.3.14 clears the problem, but any of the 5.10.x kernels I tried have problems. Searching has got me nothing so far...

Any suggestions as to how I can diagnose this (and, even better, how I can fix it)?

I am running into the same problems and I would like to see a solution as well.

I thought things were getting better. Upgraded to the 5.10.5 kernel late yesterday and found I could boot the laptop normally and everything was working. Only temporary though. When I booted 5.10.5 today, I was back to both the thinkfinger and the touchpad not working, mouse cursor stuck in whatever position it was in when lighdm started.

I tired a USB mouse, which worked, but that is no more than a temporary fix. I use the laptop in all sorts of situations, and often won't have anywhere to put a mouse. Not to mention that I've been using laptops with thinkfinger controls for a long time, would love to have the same on a desktop keyboard as well.

Still no other suggestions as to what might be needed, but droping back to 5.9.14 works without problems, so it seems to be something very much kernel related.

I think all the old ThinkPad are suffering similar problems with 5.10 and 5.11
Maybe we could track the situation on this thread of mine, where I suggest a little workaround removing and modprobbing again i2c_i801

Sounds good. Though I can't confirm all older Thinkpads suffering the problem. I have a T420 and a T430S, neither of which show any problems with any of the 5.10.xx kernels. I'm using the T430s now.

May be too early to be certain, but since I upgraded them all to 5.10.11, the problem hasn't come back on the T450S. Not sure that it won't, but so far.....
