New GPU User - Radeon RX5500 XT - no fans

Help folks,

I'm at a loss right now.  I feel like I've searched and tried everything with varying results now.

Primary issue right now - no fan control at all, no fans spinning except on system startup with a newly installed AMD RX5500 XT GPU.

System specs:
Gigabyte z77x-UDH5 board
Intel i7-3770
32G RAM
Samsung 850 Pro main OS

So, I've been using this system since I built it back in 2012 or so.  Rock solid build.  Never any issues. Used the integrated Intel graphics the whole time (since disabled in BIOS) Then comes Christmas 2020, and like everyting else in 2020, ...

I only upgraded because of a potential disruption in the kid's gift shopping.  Picked up a second (locally) and ended up with 2 of the GPUs and figured I'd keep one for myself.

Arch just installed after Christmas - bare install with Gnome and could barely get it to stay running.  After a bunch of different troubleshooting, looking at logs and finally getting smart and installing sensors, I saw that the fans weren't running.  Tried amdgpu-fan fan amdgpu-fancontrol.  Both options seemed to trigger changes in the /sys/class/drm/card0/device/hwmon/* directories.  I tried the scripts, then tried to trigger manually, to no avail either way.

Down to the nitty gritty:

It's using amdgpu driver.

03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 14 [Radeon RX 5500/5500M / Pro 5500M] [1002:7340] (rev c5)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device [1458:2319]
        Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
        Kernel modules: amdgpu

If I install amdgpu-pro-libgl, then sddm/gdm/lightdm don't load up, nor does KDE or Gnome when launched directly, so I'm just bare amdgpu currently.  I have not yet tried anything Vulkan, even though the product supposedly supports it.

Re: New GPU User - Radeon RX5500 XT - no fans

Last release of https://github.com/chestm007/amdgpu-fan was in april 2019 approx 6 months before AMD released your card.
I'd be surprised if it did work.

The logs parts you posted show firmware related issues .

I suggest you
- configure early microcode loading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mi … ly_loading
- The Gigabyte z77x-UDH5 has 2 hardware revisions, 1.0 and 1 .1 . Which do you have ?
Verify whether you are running the latest firmware version for your revision .

- post full journalctl -b (as root) , lspci -k   and xorg log .

- Several users of older intel processors have problems with kernels 5.5+ . Install linux-lts alongside linux and add options to your bootloader to switch between them easily.

If I install amdgpu-pro-libgl, then sddm/gdm/lightdm don't load up, nor does KDE or Gnome when launched directly, so I'm just bare amdgpu currently.

the amd opensource drivers tend to perform better then amdgpu-pro apart from compute tasks, just stick to them.
(If neccessary it's possible to combine closed source compute with mesa amdgpu opensource drivers) .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
