pacman -Syu fails on perl5

This machine doesnt have much on it, but maybe I hosed when getting vmware installed.  My other machine has a very similar config, and is still working.  Anyway, both running xine and "pacman -Syu" fail, here is the ouput:

Re: pacman -Syu fails on perl5

Apparently libssl is broken. I fixed this with these two commands I saw in the IRC channel:

ln -s /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7 /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.6
ln -s /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7 /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.6

thx

Re: pacman -Syu fails on perl5

Well, xine now works, but "pacman -Syu" still fails.

Re: pacman -Syu fails on perl5

JGC in IRC told me how to fix "pacman -Syu" problem, I just needed to overwrite the files with this command:

pacman -Suf

thx!

Re: pacman -Syu fails on perl5

big_smile  smile Sarah;

Reviewing ...man pacman...I find not reference to ...-Suf... but i do find one reference to the term.... --f... which is one of the commands which is not recommended(not at all).

The use of ...-Suf... combo is not listed.

I have no idea how to interpret the use of pacman when such upgrade problems are encountered.  And I would not be able to apply the pacman system in any new problem I may encounter without examples that keep me out of more trouble should more " forcing functions" or other work arounds be necessary.

I more than appreciate the post describing how to proceed when the upgrade reports that the file already exists because it provided a procedure which successfully corrected the difficulty and eliminated the "fear of failure" associated with the "force" command(not recommended at all).

Please appreciate that I did read the man pacman many times but am not confident in using elements of that manual in "combination", especially when warned not to use "force".

Please appreciate the fact that pacman is advertised as an asset for arch and, when not encountering the difficulty of this post, it does upgrade efficiently.

I have re-installed arch about a dozen times due to my ignorance of pitfalls in the upgrade process some of which haven't shown themselves in the posts I have read.

But the first ...-Syu...gave the result covered by this post{16 packages rejected).

To one familiar with linux and arch, all things appear in the manual but not in a form recognized from the viewpoint of a newbie especially if interpretation is required.

I am told to research the forums, which I did.  When I found a posted solution and thanked those involved, I am told that the solution is somewhere in the manual......

One's point of view is paramount, expert or novice.....

Re: pacman -Syu fails on perl5

and you see a -Syuf or -Suf? f is force whether or not it is with -S, -Su, -Syu or any other combo.

the attempt is to teach self reliance not to request a scolding. or be told that manpages are unreliable.

i am not an expert, in fact far from it. i am patient and i have learned that once one asks too much you get little back. i also know that 90% of the questions one could ask have been answered here or, for more general issues, elsewhere. sometime you have to do alot of searching but "wasting" your time with a laborous  search is often far more progressive to one's learning than the quick, and sometimes bothersome, way out.

with enough "work" you will even learn that the old wives tale the manpages are bad is a falicy. do you think i am an expert because i consult manpages first? no i do it because it is often the first and only place you need to look.

sarah31 do you understand the fact that most of your posts are not helpfull and just plain mean?

i have seen alot of complaints about arch not being active enough and i would assume that most of this comes for lookin at the forums and with people like you around i do not think that will change very soon.

Hmm...I really don't know how you can believe that. 1700+ posts, I know for a fact that Sarah31 has helped many people on this forum...perhaps your interpretation of her writing style leads you to this conclusion, but remember it's your interpretation and it's not fair to criticise people based on that.

Re: pacman -Syu fails on perl5

yawn! i have heard it all before. simple fact is if you don't want to listen/read my posts then don't.

mean .... to be honest who the hell cares? i don't belive in spoon feeding the already overfed fish in some of the ponds around here.

arch not busy ? i think you must be mistaken or just not very observant. these forums have shown a marked upswing in business for the last two months.

as for me not helping ... whatever.  that is your opinion but again i think you have your head in the sand. i have been plenty helpful. i did plenty of work for arch. what have you done lately?
