My Intel Z97 motherboard recently died, and I chose to replace it with an AMD B550 motherboard (which also forced me to replace the CPU and memory). I did not replace my GeForce GTX 760. The hardware install went great, memory tests passed, and everything booted as expected. For the most part, everything on my system still works as expected, except for Xorg.
The problem I'm having, which I've only noticed while running Firefox, is that some actions (scrolling quickly in Firefox, trying to watch a YouTube video in Firefox) will cause Xorg to take up 100% of CPU and start dropping events:
...
[ 429.609] (EE) event15 - Das Keyboard: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 11ms, your system is too slow
[ 429.609] (EE) event15 - Das Keyboard: WARNING: log rate limit exceeded (5 msgs per 60min). Discarding future messages.
[ 541.040] (EE) client bug: timer event19 debounce: scheduled expiry is in the past (-99ms), your system is too slow
[ 541.040] (EE) client bug: timer event19 debounce short: scheduled expiry is in the past (-112ms), your system is too slow
...
I've tried reproducing this with other browsers such as Chromium, and running other applications like Steam and OpenSCAD, but nothing causes the high CPU usage and immense system slowdown like Firefox does. Running Firefox from a clean state as a different user shows no improvement in behaviour.
I think I've narrowed this down to the nvidia driver - by uninstalling nvidia and installing xf86-video-nouveau, the problem went away and I was able to use Firefox just fine. However, nouveau doesn't work well with some other applications/games I use, so this isn't a long-term solution. Wiping the xorg graphic configs and re-installing the nvidia driver (460.32.03-1) brought back the exact same issue as before installing the nouveau driver.
My combined (all the xorg.conf.d files) Xorg config is as follows:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 460.32.03

Does anyone have any advice on how to further debug or resolve this situation? If it's a driver issue, I worry that changing out for another nvidia graphics card won't help and that I'd have to get an entirely different AMD graphics card.
Thank you in advance for any help!

Create new Firefox profile and check if you still have problem on it.
BTW. what applications/games doesn't work well on nouveau for you?

I tested both creating a new profile, and using a new firefox profile on a separate linux user account that had never used firefox before with a different window manager (I usually use awesome). The issue was not resolved in either case.
Sadly nouveau isn't working well with some Steam games running through Proton. (Risk of Rain 2 is my current obsession and crashes immediately when using the nouveau driver.)
