[SOLVED] Issues with panel windows, tabs, maximise button

I ran an update after boot today as usual and the system was normal for a while, but then in the middle of the day I could not switch from one window to another in my bottom panel without it rubber-banding me back to the first one in the row. If I swap a window around with the first one, I can use it just fine but if I try to change to another one - either by clicking on it or using Alt+Tab, it switches right back to the first. Whenever I try to use Alt+tab, sometimes it switches between multiple applications, such as notes or other browsers, but not always. It's infrequent.

This also happens with individual tabs on Chromium: I have both Chromium and Firefox installed on my system and I have opened multiple tabs on each. Firefox seems unaffected as I can switch inbetween two or more tabs without any problems. On Chromium, however, as soon as I open another tab or try to change tabs, it shoots me back to the first one in the row.

I have pulled out my keyboard from my computer and the effect persists, so it's nothing to do with my hardware.

What else I have noticed is the few times I have managed to get to another window, hovering over the first window in my bottom panel changes the focused window to the first window without clicking it or using Alt+tab. This also happens on the Maximise button on application windows. When I have a terminal open, the window maximises and unmaximises just by hovering over the button. This also happens on Firefox, but it doesn't happen with Chromium. I don't know why.

Any advice would be appreciated.

UPDATE:

This 'libpng' error appears whenever I open a Chromium tab. An attempt to copy using Ctrl+C caused the terminal to close and all the windows currently open along with it.

I've noticed as well after opening up my audio settings (MATE Volume Control), the volume bars begin to decrease (i.e. slide to the left) just by hovering over them. The issue of switching between tabs is also apparent in the volume control: whenever I click on one of the bars (e.g. Input, Output, Applications, etc), it switches from one bar to the other before arriving back at the start. The closest I can get to editing anything in them is by clicking on the respective bar and moving my mouse fast enough to catch it before it changes. Whatever is happening, at least one of the issues seems to be linked to hovering with the mouse.

UPDATE:

The terminal is appearing every time I launch Chromium. This is does not happen with Firefox so it seems local to Chromium. I've noticed that immediately after clicking on a tab in Chromium, I can stay on the desired page without it moving to the front tab by moving the mouse immediately onto the page after clicking. However, if I move the mouse onto one of the tabs or even to the top of the window, the tabs start switching from right to left before arriving at the front. I still cannot use Alt+Tab either.

I'd say something is spamming a keyboard or mouse event. run xev (from xorg-xev) in a terminal, focus the window, do you get output? Might also be some stuck HW button or so

I also cannot drag the terminal very far without dropping it: whenever I grab a window to drag it across the screen, it gets dropped after a second or two. I have to keep dragging it very quickly.

UPDATE:

Well, I feel silly now. So, I uninstalled Chromium from my machine and then reinstalled it. The terminal that was appearing with the error messages before seems to have fixed itself. I ran another update today and it looks like I have regained the ability to Alt+Tab between windows.

After unplugging my mouse from my computer and then plugging it back in, the problems I was having seem to have fixed themselves. My windows are no longer moving from one side to another, my tabs aren't expanding and minimising through hovering, and my Volume Control is totally within my own control. So, my system seems to be all fixed.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
