[SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

I have been using Steam nearly daily without issues before. Just today I tried to start it again, but it never did. Here's what I tried so far:

  • Reinstalled Steam running "pacman -S steam".

  • Reset Steam by running "steam --reset" and "steam-runtime --reset".

  • Reinstalling my video drivers using pacman.

I have read on various other places that a similar error occurs when starting Steam without Nvidia drivers, but I use an AMD R9 380X, so that can't be the issue. I'm trying to run Steam on KDE Plasma, like I usually do.

Here's the output when trying to start Steam from the terminal.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Any help? I genuinely cannot start up Steam whatsoever, even after uninstalling and reinstalling it. Should I maybe report this on the GitHub page for Steam?

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Post the coredumps contents: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … _core_dump

FWIW there are often slight library incompatibilities between the steam stack and Arch's up-to date stack and it can help to try using steam-native-runtime with the steam-native launcher in case that that is the case.

Unless this is the next troubleshooting step I'd like to avoid installing the native runtime for now. But if the regular runtime won't work, then I guess I'll be forced to try it.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

grml nothing useful in that segfault. FWIW reading the normal log again it fails in the GPU sandbox for the chromium/blink instance. that's definitely something that can happen here due to lib mismatches, so yes I'd suggest to try that. What's the hold up for doing so? You can still use the normal steam-runtime and can test there on steam updates.

Just the big red warning on the Arch Wiki tongue

The Steam Native runtime also segfaults. Here's its output which is very similar.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

I have uninstalled Steam, deleted all files in ~/.local/share/Steam, reinstalled Steam and the segfault still happens. It might be a library that was recently updated that broke it, but I'm not sure since it seems like I'm the only person who has this issue. I can't really think of much else to do other than to reinstall Arch and see if that fixes the issue, but I really don't want to have to do that.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Reinstalling Arch Linux in hopes of a magical fix is seldom a good idea.

Do you use out of repo llvm/mesa or so? does basic stuff like glxinfo -B work correctly? Do you see any further messages in the journal on starting steam/potentially kernel errors or so?

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

I'm using no out of repo packages, all my video drivers were installed from the extra or multilib repos. glxinfo -B is an unrecognised command. journalctl gives some more info on the segfault, I've extracted interesting lines below and have uploaded the whole output of journalctl -b to this GitHub gist (the extracted lines are 3244 to 3278). In the full output you'll see the same segfault repeated a few times since I ran Steam multiple times when testing.

Is this an issue with my memory? I also had issues in this thread where someone mentioned that memory issues could have been the cause.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

A didn't realize you were that person as well, yes this does start to sound like you have some weirdish HW issues here. I'd suggest you run a memcheck for a night or so. https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/memtest86+/

Also as this might be relevant, make sure your microcode updates as relevant for your chipset are applied

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Good news is that my memory passed all tests that memtest did. Bad news is that that means I don't have an idea what the issue could be.

Another interesting error that appeared: Firefox Dev Edition 85.0b8-1 doesn't work, when it starts the window frame is shown but it immediately freezes (the current background is kept frozen in place if that makes sense) and the only option is to terminate it, since it would otherwise just be useless in that state. Downgrading to 85.0b7-1 fixes this issue. I'm not sure whether this is unrelated, or whether this also has something to do with this issue.

I also have amd-ucode installed and applied.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

nothing really sticking out... Your BIOS/UEFI is quite old, I recall a few threads with weird compat issues and ryzen on older UEFI firmwares. That might be worth a shot. Other suggestion that are somewhat random but have helped people.. iommu=pt or iommu=soft on the kernel parameters.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

/var/lib/systemd/coredump/core.steam.1000.bbcceaa5128e44019f90ce4f9d368d60.68571.1610547589000000.zst

The zstd issue of the other thread might spoil the coredump.

glxinfo is part of "mesa-demos" and we should probably see that.

Also

LC_ALL=C pacman -Qkk 2>&1 |  grep -v '0 altered files'

Maybe, as I said, packages work fine now, but that could very well be the case.

glxinfo -B looks fine.

The very first thing I see is a permissions mismatch on amd-ucode. Could that be an issue?

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

It should not, the permission mismatch is going to be normal if your /boot is non-POSIX like a vfat EFI partition  and the file will be read as root by the bootloader anyway.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Is there a way I can view what packages were updated when? Because if there's a package that was updated around the 11th or the few days before that Steam relies on, maybe I could downgrade that and see if it works? Otherwise, I'll be forced to try a reinstallation of Arch, not being able to play any of the games I own is not something that I'm very happy about.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Something a lot easier than I thought, after downgrading lib32-llvm-libs to 11.0.0-2 and then back to the latest version, at the moment 11.0.2-1, Steam works. I guess there was an incorrect installation of lib32-llvm-libs, but I really don't know. Thank you, everybody, for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] Steam segmentation fault on start up

Since this is at least the second time you seem to have  a harddisk related issue I'd suggest you run a smart check on your drives: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/S. … Run_a_test it might give some more information that's not covered by a badblocks run
