Firewire issues using Vuescan

Hello Arch family,

I am attempting to setup my Nikon 9000 firewire scanner with Vuescan however it doesnt seem to be able to find the device.

Running as root changes nothing, the scanner does show up in /proc/scsi/scsi

Attached devices:
Host: scsi4 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Nikon    Model: LS-9000 ED       Rev: 1.01
  Type:   Scanner

I am using a TI firewire card adapter to the nvme slot on my motherboard. Drivers seem to be loaded, checked with with lspci -v

02:00.0 PCI bridge: Texas Instruments XIO2000(A)/XIO2200A PCI Express-to-PCI Bridge (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
	Bus: primary=02, secondary=03, subordinate=03, sec-latency=32
	I/O behind bridge: [disabled]
	Memory behind bridge: 54600000-546fffff [size=1M]
	Prefetchable memory behind bridge: [disabled]
	Capabilities: <access denied>

03:00.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments XIO2200A IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link) (rev 01) (prog-if 10 [OHCI])
	Subsystem: Texas Instruments Device 8023
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 16
	Memory at 54604000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2K]
	Memory at 54600000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: firewire_ohci
	Kernel modules: firewire_ohci

This is the ouput of "lsmod | grep 'firewire\|1394'"

firewire_sbp2 28672 0
firewire_ohci 45056 0
firewire_core 81920 2 firewire_ohci,firewire_sbp2
crc_itu_t 16384 1 firewire_core

I am still trying to wrap my head around how the linux kernel works and how modules are loaded/how firewire and scsi devices interact with the system so I dont fully understand what that means.

lssci -g returns:

[4:0:0:0] scanner Nikon LS-9000 ED 1.01 - -
[N:0:8215:1] disk WDS100T3X0C-00SJG0__1 /dev/nvme0n1 -

Again, not sure what to make of this bit either. I found a few other threads on the topic and it showed the scsi device mounted somewhere but they threads were all on scsi drives and this is a scanner so I am not sure if it is supposed to show something like /dev/sda0

And this is where I am stuck, the vuescan log (which I will throw at the bottom as its quite long) says its checking for scsi devices, and the nikon shows up in /proc/scsi/scsi so I am struggling to understand why vuecan cant see it. Am I missing something, is there somewhere else the device should be that vuescan might look at?

Please pardon me if this is a noob post and violates any guidlines I will happily take it down/move it. I am but a humble kid trying to learn more about technology. Any help is much appreciated . If there is ever anything I can do to return a favor I will happily do so. Thank you!

Re: Firewire issues using Vuescan

I was hooking a Nikon Coolscan 4000 to use with VueScan today. Besides being a Nikon 4000 instead of 9000, I have the same output. Seems detected, but VueScan fails to see it. Sane doesn't see it either.

When testing with sane, it mentioned the sg modules needed to be loaded for SCSI scanners.

modprobe sg

After loading, sane found it. I then did a Find Scanners in VueScan and it found it as well. Time to test it...
