Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

Got my 6800 yesterday, and completed build and OS install today.
I can confirm the only special thing to do is install linux-mainline from AUR. Thanks to all of you who narrowed it down while I waited for my hardware to arrive.
Arch will likely get linux 5.10 in a few weeks, and then everything will work out of the box! Good job AMD!

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

Looks like this time software support will arrive before hardware - excepting some lucky people here wink
Actually that is a great thing big_smile

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

I would just like to add to the chorus of "successful" arch install on a 6800 but the system is not the most stable (unsurprisignly). Notably I get constant issues with blender that very realiably crashes X11.

So my suggestion is: wait.

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

Anyone tried rx6800 with the latest 5.9.12 kernel?

It should now be compatible
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= … on-RX-6800

Edit:
Testet it my self.
Works fine for me

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

I just tried RX 6800 XT with the latest kernel 5.9.13 and it works. Now RX 6800 XT should work out of the box with the latest arch linux.
But for some reason, steamplay games won't start with the official kernel and mesa libraries. I had to use mainline kernel, mesa-git, and lib32-mesa-git to be able to play steamplay games.

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

Hmm. I played Cyberpunk 2077 on steam today and it's working without any problems. At least so far. Performance could be better. I'm hitting 60fps 3440x1440 on high settings with RX 6800 XT and 3950x. Again, I'm using the mainline kernel, mesa-git, lib32-mesa-git, and xf86-video-amdgpu-git.

What Proton version did you use? It doesn't work for me and I have the same config as you, it's infinitely "Preparing to launch" with both Proton 5.13-14 and the experimental one.

I'm on 5.10.0-rc6-1-mainline.

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

Kernel: 5.10.0-rc6-1-mainline
Proton 5.13 next 1607520831 proton-5.13-4

I'm sure you've already seen these pages:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … leshooting
https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … _readonly/

The read-only problem happened to me in the past which caused the perpetual "Preparing to launch" problem.

Other than that, the problem also happened to me whenever there was a configuration change like a new graphics card or using a different mesa version. The way I fix this problem is by deleting steam compatdata data in all of my library locations which for me it would be:

rm ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/* -rf
rm /ssd1/Programs/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/* -rf
rm /hdd1/Programs/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/* -rf

I hope this solves your problem too.

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

So I got my 6800 and while it seems to work with 5.9.14 kernel, I noticed that the mem clock is stuck at 1000Mhz

$ cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/pp_dpm_mclk
0: 96Mhz
1: 456Mhz
2: 673Mhz
3: 1000Mhz *

And also /sys/class/drm/card0/device/pp_od_clk_voltage seems to be empty. This is my first radeon gpu in 12 years, but I think its supposed to have a clock - voltage table for core and memory clocks, right?
Anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: found a similar issue on this amdgpu gitlab tracker

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

Hi, I'm having issues where it comes up and tells me there is missing firmware. I have tried everything. I'm using an aftermarket card and I'm thinking the linux-firmware-git is not as up to date as it should be. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've tried installing linux-mainline, linux-firmware-git, mesa-git, lib32-mesa-git and xf86-video-amdgpu-git all returning a black screen on restart. I've been at it for 2 days and I have no idea how to fix it....

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

zamnell88 I would suggest starting a new thread,  include in it the full output of dmesg.
Edit:
Also the output of:

pacman -Qi linux-firmware-git

The problem is that my install of ArcoLinux will install fine but if I try to update the system in anyway I will just get a black screen. I don't have any of the packages installed that are recommended because anything I try I just get a black screen on reboot.

So what should I do?

Edit: As soon as I update to the latest firmware-git I get a black screen.

Ask on the ArcoLinux forums, we only support Arch Linux here as was stated in the rules you agreed to when registering...

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

TLDR:
Arch has everything you need stock now. If you use gnome/gdm and are getting black screens.

- Boot into text mode. (While booting in grub press `e` and add a `3` to the end of the line `linux      /boot/...`, press ctrl+x)
- Add `amdgpu` to  /etc/mkinitcpio.conf  MOUDLES (..)
- Run `mkinitcpio -p linux`
- Reboot and enjoy:)

Re: Radeon 6800 / 6800XT graphics

I just traded in my 3090 fe I had for a 6900 xt from someone locally, and can say, out of the box, everything booted up fine. All I did was remove anything nvidia and installed xf86 amdgpu, mesa, and vulkan radeon. Played a bit of warcraft 3 reforged (2 hours worth), WoW (dx11 performs well, dx12 is laggy and bad fps drops while with my 3090 dx12 was smooth as windows 10), and The Outer Worlds without problems.

Lm-sensors also shows fan speed, core, hotspot, and gddr 6 temps. Along with core voltage and power consumption. My core gets up to 78c, hotspot 96c, and gddr 6 up to 86c. Fans spin slow. Seems like the driver or firmware prefers low noise over lower temps. Idle is atrocious. 55-60c idle temps. Even on the gddr 6. Since the fans turn off at idle. My 3090 idled at 33c even though its fans turned off too. Seems like power usage is high at idle which can explain. My 6900 xt at idle is around 30-40 watts. I do have a 165hz 1440p nano ips screen say maybe that's why.

I went ahead after a quick testing and reinstalled arch to ensure anything nvidia was removed. So anyone else who manages to get a 6900 xt, it should work fine with arch as of writing.I am assuming the current 20201218.646f159 firmware at least has support for it.

The only oddity is that neofetch reports it as some weird string. AMD ATI something something. Instead of 6900 xt. But neofetch also showed my 3090 as some random string too.

Gotta say, it really looks like a cylon lol.
Edit:
Was thinking, anyone know if it's possible to change the radeon led color?

OpenRGB doesn't support it yet. I had to boot into Windows to change the LED color for my RX 6800 XT reference. Fortunately, it keeps the color even after reboots. Here's the software I used to change it in Windows.

thank you very much. i guess i'll wait till openrgb has support for it. or i stop being lazy and install windows on one of my extra drives. its nice to know it is possible though smile
