Davinci Resolve does not start. Nvidia bug with kernel 5.9

Hi all,
after a system upgrade, i recalled that nvidia is not supported by kernel 5.9, and now my Davinci Resolve does not start anymore.

Looking on the forum, i found that the best idea is to install the linux-lts kernel and i did a downgrade to lts

# uname -r
5.4.85-1-lts

# pacman -Q| grep linux-lts
linux-lts 5.4.85-1
linux-lts-headers 5.4.85-1

What about nvidia?
i thought i had to simply downgrade the kernel, but it was not enough.
I tried installing nvidia dkms, then i tried downgrading to nvidia lts, now i am back on dkms. this is the current situation:

# pacman -Q| grep nvidia
nvidia-dkms 455.45.01-1
nvidia-utils 455.45.01-1
opencl-nvidia 455.45.01-1

Davinci resolve does not start.

Grepping in the logs/ResolveDebug.txt file i found the following error messages and it seemed related to what others had related to the incompatibility between nvidia driver and new kernel.

$ cat ResolveDebug.txt | grep ERROR
[0x7f1c492a5640] | SyManager | ERROR | 2020-12-23 14:31:43,833 | Failed to connect to panel socket
[0x7f1c492a5640] | SyManager | ERROR | 2020-12-23 14:31:43,833 | DRIVER: open /var/tmp/davinci_socket failed

The system was working properly until the last upgrade. this is the content of pacman cache:

Re: Davinci Resolve does not start. Nvidia bug with kernel 5.9

There's no nvidia bug with the 5.9 kernel since like two or three driver versions.  And no evidence in that log that would point to an issue with the nvidia driver (maybe post the actual unaltered output of a start attempt rather than a select 3 lines).  Reading the AUR page: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/davinci-resolve/ mentions issues with the current curl version so you could try downgrading that or switching to the beta version of davinci .

Not a kernel or hardware issue, moving to AUR issues...

In a more general sense, it's pointless to "downgrade to nvidia-lts or dkms"  that won't change a thing, use DKMS if you want to be independent of the kernels you've installed and remove nvidia-lts or don't use the dkms package and rely on the packagers and just use nvidia-lts (... and nvidia for the non-LTS kernel) . Under normal circumstances switching between nvidia-lts or -dkms should have no relevant effect.

Thanks for the answer.
The reason that brought me thinking of this is that when i turned on the system after the update, davinci resolve was crashing with dump.
tried to update again and then lightdm did not event start. The only way was using the current situation. However, resolve 15 (not 16) seems to be died.

I am going to update everything to the latest packages...and let you know

OK, i restored everything to the last version and looked into davinci reslve log files:

i am not able to understand what's going wrong here. From the blackmagick forum it seems the first errors (related to the panel are "conservative logging"

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Hi all, same issue for me since last update... Blackmagic helps only CentOs users...

Hi,
my issue is still unresolved.
However i don't know if it is any type of incompatibility between kernel, video driver or what.
After the upgrade the video renderer was not detecting my graphic card (nvidia). I solved this point BUT it did not solve the dumps i obtain from resolve.

The only thing people suggested on blackmagic forum was to install the v16, even though i think you can have some problem dealing with the old projects.
What i am going to do is to backup the resolve folder in /opt/ and prey that when v16 starts it notices there is a old db and tries to import it.

V16 installed, but crash again, not on fusion dump core now but something with audio... really annoying, I was a Studio user (I paid the licence) and everything was ok before last nvidia update.

There's no evidence towards an nvidia issue in any of the posted logs. But Arch has a lot of moving parts, if you need stability in this space, Arch is not the best distribution to rely on.

I've been using Arch for years, I'm not going to leave it for a program or a technical issue, I'm just going to take the time to find a solution. ;-)
