usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

i have a usb hard disk that is recognized  by lsusb  but not by sudo fdisk -l  or blkid

i tried with UBCD disk (dd clone testdisk) but it is not recognized either

windows 7 sees it as device but not as drive letter

is there a software that can deal with that situation ?

Re: usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

Please post the actual lsusb output and check what dmesg reports about the bus/device it's on.

Re: usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

You said it was recognized by lsusb, but I don't see anything that looks like an eaget g30 in that lsusb output.

As for dmesg, please link to the ungrepped complete content - you are grepping out everything that'd be worth seeing.

Re: usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

Does the drive spin up when plugged in?  Are you using a powered USB port (and have you tried other ports)?

EDIT: nvm, I was looking at an old output prior to the edit.

Re: usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

the blue light is on and lsusb sees it but i don't feel it spin up

i don't know  if the port is powered but i tried some ports and some computers (with win7)

i'll ask the owner if she remember if it used to spin up

Re: usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

You should™ get some timout/error in dmesg if you're trying to read a disk that can't spin up.
Can you query it w/ hdparm?

However, googling "eaget hdd" returns a lot of USB3 disks and you're running it on a USB2 port.
While technically downward compatible, usb3 provides more current than usb2 - so this could be a problem.

Your kernel has the patch.
Is this a usb3 disk?

I don't think there's a HW failure. Do you have access to a system w/ a USB3 port?

Re: usb disk not found by fdisk(and by win7)

idem.
So doesn't look like more power™ has any impact.

Pretty much the last idea I'd have would be to disassemble the drive and plug it directly (or you'll probably need a differet (m)SATA adapter or the disk uses some unspecified interface to the case and you're screwed)
And even then: be prepared that the disk just really won't spin up anymore.
