I recently installed Arch and have run into an issue of no audio. PAVU Control shows "Dummy Output" as the output device.
speaker-test -c2 plays sound on both laptop speakers
alsamixer has been checke and everything is unmuted
I have provided some output below which I hope is somewhat helpful. Please let me know if anything else is needed.
Below is the output of lspci.

Have you got pulseaudio-alsa installed?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio
Offline
That ALSA config will lead to exclusive access for anything that starts to play audio and uses the ALSA API, you should remove it and opt for pulseaudio-alsa instead. What's your output of
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*during this? And why are you the root user in these outputs? Do you start your graphical session as root? That would also be a big no.
Offline
Yes, I have pulseaudio-alsa installed.
Offline
I have added myself to the /etc/sudoers file. It is a fresh install and I would use su in the terminal to gather the output.
[deep@envy17t ~]$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: deep 748 F.... pulseaudioOffline
OP -- I don't have the solution and do not intend to hijack, but I think this discussion is worth continuing. I have also struggled with the dummy output issue in the last 1-2 months. I use DWM and Gnome with same issue across both on various arch 5.10 kernels, LTS 5.4, and mainline kernels. I have spent in inordinate amount of time on archwiki ALSA/Pulseaudio as well as the the documentation for ALSA. I cannot use alsamixer or amixer without sudo or root access. Various suggestions like adding user to audio group, etc. have proved unfruitful.
I currently am using TOSLINK/SPDIF out of ASUS mobo but this issue also occurs with normal 1/8 inch out and headphones.
**To restore sound, the only reliable solution I've found is to delete entire pulse folder in ~/.config/ and completely shutdown. Reboot into DWM - sound is restored and dummy output is gone -- replaced with AMD Starship/Matisse or whatever is appropriate for your hardware. This does not work if I shutdown and directly boot into gnome (via startx /usr/bin/gnome-session).
The only commonality I've seen is that this always occurs with intel mobo onboard audio. Still looking for root cause myself.
Offline
I have the exact same issue or at least something related.
A freshly installed Arch install has no audio. I only see Dummy Output in pavucontrol.
The good thing is, I do see the controller with lspci
lspci | grep Audio
00:1f.3 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller (rev 20)
The alsamixer application only shows PulseAudio as the selected card however.
When I F2 to see the cards there are no cards to be displayed.
I would appreciate some advice!

easylee, you probably need the sof-firmware package, that should be a different issue than codehaiku.

Thank you. I now also found it in the ArchWiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … A_Firmware) and it resolved my problem.

I had a dummy output problem recently also, it seemed to arise with the upgrade of pulseaudio-14.2-2. I found that the conf file for my steelseries headset used to be located in "/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/profile-sets/", but I understand recently this has changed as per Reddit Pulseaudio Post to "/usr/share/alsa-card-profile/mixer/profile-sets/".
Check if the conf file for your sound device is in the new profile-sets directory. HTH.

No it has been changed back to the /usr/share/pulseaudio location due to conflicts with the available profile versions between (pipewire) alsa-card-profiles and what the stable pulse release ships. This also is generally unlikely to be the issue here.
@codehaiku sorry this drowned a bit please post
