sound entirely broken

Hello :-)

Had no idea snd_hda_intel would vanish, or anything about sof-firmware changes. Found out via plugging headphones in killed sound; a reboot used to fix that, but ended up messing around and a reinstall needed. Have tried so many things (including alsamixer/unmute/save changes, different kernels, etc), read wiki and everywhere, and saw that creating an asound.conf including defaults.pcm.card 1 and defaults.ctl.card 1 could work, which it did, briefly, but on the next reboot it's gone, as well as 2nd monitor now not showing, after caught and unplugged hdmi cable by accident, so am not sure if that's related.

Eventually found a post about sof-firmware ... has made no difference after reboot. At moment have removed all pulseaudio and have only jack and sof-firmware installed, have run rm -R ~/.config/pulse, and going to try reboot. Running 5.4 LTS, Mate, on TUF GAMING X570-PLUS, AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, Radeon RX5700XT. Navi 10 HDMI Audio and Starship/Matisse HD Audio both need snd-hda-intel, which I can't find anywhere. Sorry, a real beginner, and various health difficulties. Would be very grateful for advice. Will add bits found during searches. In inxi, sound devices show as running on snd-hda-intel, but that's not available.

Hello V1del and thank you very much for your response. The solution I was trying hadn't worked, so I'd found some suggestions e.g. blacklist snd_soc_ski, which didn't work, and then tried 'snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0' added into grub, which hasn't worked.  Have just reversed that, and will provide outputs.

I think alsamixer is pointing to card 1 being the main one. I've made sure automute is off, and turned up to full various columns.

Thank you for your time reading all that code! I'm using VLC ... but just to report that somehow audio has righted itself. Had gone to offline non-updated laptop, turning off the network on the main PC (just a privacy thing)... clicked over to load something onto USB later, and there was sound! No idea what seems to have fixed it tbh; could have been uninstalling pulseaudio/alsa etc, then reinstalling, or I ran sudo pacman -Sy lib32-alsa-plugins lib32-libpulse lib32-openal as part of normal reinstalls. Not sure, but will reboot to test.

EDIT: sound still okay after reboot.

You should never run pacman -Sy always use -Syu otherwise you are in partial upgrade territory which might as well be the reason for the original issue.

For VLC playback with pulseaudio you need to have libpulse installed which should be a baseline dependency of a lot of things.

Great advice ... normally run -Syu, so I'm not sure what I've copy/pasted over from my notes there, lol. I have libpulse installed, and the sound has been great until a couple of minutes ago ... everything went dead (freetube video and small wine game both were active then went silent). I've tried many other things, including installing pipewire, but that was dreadful (vlc video jumping/no server found etc). At this point have removed all pipewire and pulseaudio, and some alsa packages remain/unable to remove. Have tried so many things to fix this audio.

Not sure what to do, as, when am learning more about pipewire am seeing that it's linked to wayland/web stuff, and am not keen at all; avoid IoT/online to the max. I realise most want wayland/pipewire and aren't concerned about increasing lack of privacy/telemetry/IoT that entails. I also have increasingly realised, after nearly 4 years of misery, that linux is much more about liking testing new things and bug-fixing, including pushing for telemetry etc over the last year or so, and also there's never any announcements any more about any changes, anywhere; changes just drop and ruin everything e.g. I only saw reference to pipewire via searching forums, and there was just one thread and not much information in that. I'm too ill for all this anymore.

I've tried the Debian side (various outcomes e.g. telemetry, unable to install, tensorflow, google captcha to access forum, discord/facebook only help route, no answers, etc etc etc), looked at manjaro (snap and privacy issues/tensorflow).

Utterly despise windows, and doesn't run well offline, which is the only way I've recently tried it, after more and more problems coming in with linux, but at least would have audio/use of main recently-bought PC. I can't believe I'm left with that as possibly the only option for privacy, audio, stability (despite occasional glitches, there's a stability in being offline and never updating). Thankfully have never updated the other laptop, so still have linux audio, and can keep that so, only switching net (with vpn) on briefly when needed, but is too hard on eyes for art etc.

May I ask if there are any distros that are pro-pulseaudio/non-IoT, but that can run a new PC? I've looked absolutely everywhere, it seems, but would be more than grateful for any suggestions, incase I've missed something ... although I suppose it doesn't matter which distro I run on the main PC, as long as it's offline, as then there'd be no telemetry going out or issues brought in.

I'm not sure why you are going off on this tangent. You aren't forced to use pipewire and even if it was, the pipewire side of things is irrelevant regarding any privacy or telemetry issues that other applications might have.  If things "suddenly" went silent I'd rather think of a kernel/hardware or permissions issue. If you recheck with sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/* is pulseaudio still the only client occupying your devices? Did you test a different kernel like the LTS or so?

Thanks for response:-) Audio thing is 'final straw' stage, but I can understand it may seem off-topic to be bringing in the other stuff. All I'm reading is that pipewire is the new audio for linux, being added in to use pulseaudio also, and that the plan is pipewire and wayland working in tandem.

Audio suddenly went; hadn't touched anything or doing anything different from when it was working. I've not got pulseaudio installed at the moment, but will reinstall and add the result of the command you've requested. Pre-reboot it shows this.

I suggest you drop hidepid if it actually leads to horrific random breakage. And if you don't want to do that did you follow the setup information in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Security#hidepid ?

The thing here is if there are other processes accessing your actual devices that aren't pulseaudio then this explains your problem and you'd need to fix that, as the other processes would block access for pulseaudio to the sounddevices (and even with other programs, if you have an ALSA program taking exclusive access of the device, anything else can't output audio)

Yes, but am not sure how to fix it, and has never happened before; whatever's changing things is too broken to be included in install. Have worked through wiki. Regarding hidepid, I found /etc/swap/ but it didn't look like the example I found, including mispelling realtime as relatime, eek ... but I changed the 1 beside that to a 0, as I read that 0 gives permissions to access all. Not rebooting yet, just incase, lol, until have got a few backups done, but will add the proper output if can access that.

relatime is not a misspelling that's what the relevant mount option is called...

If you don't know where the relevant hidepid configuration comes from, did you actually install Arch? What did you follow to set up this system originally?

Thanks for response. I follow my own summary notes, from wiki and averagelinuxuser, but don't understand what most of it does, even if I read about it, so have always made sure to not try altering anything, incase it breaks. Concern is only getting away from windows/privacy invasion, and to do art. Donations have stood in stead of being able to do anything technical. Arch runs the leanest system, with choice, so it's easier to avoid bloat/telemetry etc, unlike anywhere else now, but I have no idea how I've managed to not hit bumps in the road more often, lol.

And it turns out sound comes back if the headphones are plugged in then removed ... maybe a bios thing/something switched? Have rebooted and sound still here at the moment.

Do you dualboot Windows? I once shutdown my computer on Windows with the headphones still plugged in, and then sound wouldn't work on Linux. Logging back onto Windows, plugging and unplugging the headphones and rebooting into Linux did the trick. Maybe it was some hardware configuration that is stored outside the OS.

Hi dry and thanks for response. I'm not dual-booting; never managed to get that to work when first came over nearly 4 years ago. Interesting to hear your experience ... I think in these cases there's some hidden setting/permissions at work somewhere; during trying to fix things, I'd tried a live usb (eOS) and sound had worked in that, and when I came back into Arch install, the sound worked for about 30 seconds before turning off, which got me puzzled, lol.

Just to add that sound died again, and plugging in headphones, then unplugging, worked again ... seems to be the workaround that fixes things.
