[Solved] Firefox and Thunderbird fonts look horrible

Some months ago I noticed that both Firefox and Thunderbird fonts look horrible, sometimes much worse depending on the webpage's font. This doesn't appear to be the case for Konsole or Kate. Other applications like Steam and KeepassXC are "ok". I've looked through the arch wiki for both fonts and Firefox "fonts" but nothing helps.

Pango is installed although I wouldn't know where to look for the errors mentions in the fonts wiki outside of journalctl, which didn't show anything similar.

One very obvious example. Fonts Ninja addon reports the page uses Roboto 16 pt for the text in the screenshot.

This was fine months ago but what changed I couldn't say. KDE font hinting is RGB Slight as it always has been. This problem remains for Firefox and Thunderbird regardless of hinting and level, anti-aliasing or focing DPI in KDE's System Settings >> Fonts. Konsole uses Hack 14 pt without issue.

One of the problems with font issues like this is that sometimes they are obvious to you looking at them once the change has happened but much harder to pinpoint exactly what changed. After the change, the fonts never really look good but some are more tolerable than others.

Thanks, almost forgot. As a side note, even though I like termbin for pastes, the short shelf life of a month probably means we have to avoid it.
