Thinkpad X1 Carbon Freeze under Load

I have had a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Core i7 8th Gen) for the past few months. In the last month it has begun to ramdomly hard freeze when the system is under high load - it's frozen when watching HD video, using Microsoft Teams or running DB heavy tests. The screen and mouse freezes, the fan starts ramping up speed and I can not access the text consoles via Ctlr-Alt-F2. I have to press and hold down the Power button to power down and then restart. I did some online research and people suggested disabling the security chip in BIOS, which I did but then I had another freeze shortly afterwards.

Below is the output from the end of "journalctl -b-1" where the freeze occurs.

Any idea what could be causing the lock? Any other info required?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Freeze under Load

Just checking the obvious, have you got microcode installed and is it enabled on boot?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Freeze under Load

If that means intel-ucode then it looks like I don't. I'll follow this guide (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/microcode) and see if that helps.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Freeze under Load

I'm experiencing the same issue. Uninstalling `xf86-video-intel` solves it but causes other problems for me (multiple high-resolution external monitors).

Does it work? I have the same situation as you. Always freeze under high load
