Hi, I am trying to make an external monitor work well with my Thinkpad X31, which uses the Radeon Mobility M6 LY videocard. Ideally I could have both displays showing the same desktop at different resolutions simultaneously. However, what is most important is that, if I boot with an external monitor attached, I would like it to display at a higher resolution (1280x1024) than is possible of being displayed on my laptop (1024x768).
I have tried a number of xorg.confs, but they all have the same problem. Without any additional setup, the external monitor displays but at the same resolution. Using MergedFB I think I set up the monitors so the laptop LCD displayed at a lower resolution, but I still couldn't get the external monitor to run at 1280x1024. I also could not get both monitors to display at once (is this possible?).
I am rather confused because Fn+F7 switches between monitors when I am at the console. However, it does nothing from X. Any ideas why?

Does this mean I can't use both monitors at the same time under X? But then why can I if I plug in the external monitor after X is booted?
As you can see, I am rather confused. Any help is much appreciated!
Also, could anyone point me to a good definition/explanation of MergedFB and what MonitorLayout is?

Could the secondary monitor be the VGA output to the external monitor? If i plug in my desktop flat panel, it is misrecognized as a CRT in the primary monitor section.
